Why would someone say this when leaving you

Why would a man say they might regret it when breaking up with you?
Have you ever said this and why?

I had the exact same from a bloke.
Don't think too much of it, it's likely them trying to soften the blow.
In my case I simply replied "yes you will" and left it at that.

Thanks for answering. The relationship ended in quite a healthy way and he was being overly complimentary which was confusing for me. No bad feelings at all, I will try to forget it.
