DHA test

My child is 16 months old and I see no resemblance. It’s eating away at that I might not be the biological father. I see my options as 1. Try and push this thought aside 2. Ask partner that we take a DNA tests.
im not sure if I can push this thought aside. If I am the biological father then clearly it will create some issues me asking for this test.
many advice?

Why do you think your kid should look like you - he/she has two parents.

2pinkginsplease · 24/04/2022 21:19

My children are nothing like me, however I know they are both mine as i gave birth to them .

asking for a dna will cause friction in your relationship, I’d be furious if dh asked me for a dna test for our children however if this is the only thing that will give you peace of mind then you need to proceed with it.

rahjama · 24/04/2022 21:19

Cant you do a test without your partners knowledge? Don't you just need some of baby's hair/nail/saliva?

Not really sure how it works but don't you just send that off?

As above said though babies have 2 parents and I don't really know anyone who looks like their child.

Rosco74 · 24/04/2022 21:21

It’s illegal to take a paternity test without consent.

id have thought there would be some recognisable features.

Have you any reason at all to believe your partner had sex with someone else?

Have you seen baby photos of her, her wiser family and your wider family?

Rosco74 · 24/04/2022 21:25

i understand she would be furious if I am the father. I need to consider this carefully. Hence why I’m here trying to get advice. Thanks for yours

Lol! Why?!

rahjama · 24/04/2022 21:28

If your partner has a history of cheating then fair enough but a paternity test on the basis that your 16 month old who is a tubby, dribbly, squishy blob of slobber doesn't look like you is ridiculous.

Rosco74 · 24/04/2022 21:28

Because they have your DNA. From each little feature from ear, nose, eyes nothing looks similar. My brother had 2 kids and you can see they are his.

My middle son looks nothing like his father however he does have the same shaped feet/toes and hands. My stepson is the spitting image of his mum but has his fathers body shape, more noticeable when they are stood together and a little away from me, not close up. Is there any kind of resemblance that way to you OP?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 24/04/2022 21:31

Do you have any reason to think she's cheated? Does he look like anyone else?

Rosco74 · 24/04/2022 21:33

Ive seen a number of photos from both families but it’s only in the last week I’ve seriously thought about it so it’s not been on my mind.

OP posts:
Rosco74 · 24/04/2022 21:34

I have no reason to think she has cheated. It’s purely my assumption that I would have thought I could see a little of me in him.

OP posts:
Rosco74 · 24/04/2022 21:37

I don’t see the resemblance in his hand and feet either.

OP posts:
Rosco74 · 24/04/2022 21:42

Rahjama. Your may well be right that I’m being ridiculous.

She was away on holiday 10 days before the positive test which is something I worked out yesterday.

When my dc were small they looked nothing like me, but as they have grown up they are becoming more like me, it's weird. My best friend has 2 dds, the elder one looks exactly like her family, the younger one closely resembles his. These things can be completely random. However there is a possibility that your dc isn't biologically yours, only you know how likely that is. If its eating you up why not do a sneaky dna test, I didn't know that it's illegal but I am sure lots of people do it anyway.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 24/04/2022 21:46

Gosh I don't know what to say. If you mention this it could very well ruin your marriage but 10 days before wouldn't be enough time to have got pregnant I wouldn't have thought. When I tested it said I was 2-3 weeks gone. Fwiw my dd 9 looks like both of us but when she was that age it was me one minute and him the next. I have a friend who has two boys with two different men and neither boy looks like her so it's not always a done deal they look like both of you.

Terriblecreature · 24/04/2022 21:47

I have 2 boys (same father). They are nothing alike. Oldest dark features my youngest is fair featured. My oldest looks a bit of a mixture of myself and DH but my youngest is absolutely nothing like either of us. From colourings to features. He actually looks like my sister! Which is funny as my niece is so like me! I would tread carefully with this to be honest.

Discovereads · 24/04/2022 21:49

It’s not illegal to do an ancestry DNA test on both of you which would certainly tell you if you are closely related…..MyHeritage would come back showing the % shared DNA you have (or don’t have). Just develop an interest in geanaology and build a family tree.

RedWingBoots · 24/04/2022 21:52

Do you have pictures from when your baby was born until they were a year old?

As neutral observers would be able to say that your baby has some of your features like you within the first 6 weeks.

My dad's doppelgänger was actually my cousin. Even people who met me and my siblings would go silent when they walked into a room together.

Oh and my dad accused my mum of cheating when she had me because I didn't have any if his features until I was about 5. There as my aunt, the mother of his doppelgänger, could easily point out all my paternal family features. In fact I don't have any facial maternal ones.

Tothepoint99 · 24/04/2022 21:53

A 10 day window of conception and then testing positive immediately after isn't possible.

It’s illegal to take a paternity test without consent.

But you would give the consent if you have parental resposnibility as the child's father, wouldn't you? Cellmark in Oxfordshire do 'curiosity tests' for a hundred quid or so if you want to go down that route.
