Just had a distraught mate on the phone who said that she noticed her DH had an erection whilst their small child was on his lap...fully clothed of course and apparently watching TV.

I'm not qualified to judge and trying not to make things worse so could this be a common place quirk of the male form?

Would ask DP but don't really want to share this even with him.

I don't think it's a sign of anything sinister robin.

Sounds more like maybe his mind was on other things at the time.

Maybe it was Nina and the Neurons he was watching?

EricL...thanks for being brave enough to answer...seems I might have hit on a 'man truth' that no-one wants to talk about. Not exactly enough evidence to reassure her though.

If I got worried everytime I got an erection, I'd be in a mental home.

My 3 year old climbs on me and is always standing on or kicking my bits. Erections are a very common reaction to that.

Erections often seem to just happen at the most unwelcome times and there's very little you can do about it.

lou, i wont be getting it out thanks. anyway, by the time id have soaked the towel and got myself ready, it will have gone down anyway.

It's a bloke thing, robin, your mate shouldn't worry too much.

robin3 · 04/12/2007 16:57

EricL · 05/12/2007 00:56

No problem lou.

Always happy to give you something to fuel your nightmares tonight.

Just make sure you eat some cheese immediately before bed to give it that extra bite.

lou33 · 05/12/2007 09:12

i had strange dreams

HD and EricL have hit the nob nail on the head. Unless there's something else going on, it seems pretty innocuous to me.

I sure most of us get a "morning glory". The accidental or random stiffy is just one of those kind of things. It starts when you're about 12 and you rapidly learn ways to deal with it like slipping your belt over it, long thick coats or jumpers or loose shirts outside trousers, flicking it until it goes down, thinking about Grandma etc. Horrible when it happens in the swimming pool as people have goggles and you just have to hold on the side and pretend you're tired.

I'm not a psychologist, but I know a couple of female friends who've been abused by their fathers and the common factors seem to be emotional distance, lack of interest in their child's well-being, inconsistent and severe punishments and at least two I know of had had abusive/distant parents themselves. Actually another common factor (in all bar one case) was a mother who'd been abused herself as a child and was either denying it was happening or expecting them to put up with it and keep it quiet.

DaddsterInAPearTree · 05/12/2007 13:55

and of course, he could have been watching Milkshake on Channel 5.

EricL · 05/12/2007 16:24

Yes - the day i don't get a boner at random moments is the day my life ends i think.

What meaning to life could there be after that?

DaddsterInAPearTree · 05/12/2007 22:19

Dunno EricL - maybe there's fishing, the allotment or Sudoku. On second thoughts, you might be right - better to go down with the ship IYKWIM.

Best description I've heard is "Nature's screensaver". When the mind goes blank...

Ubergeekian · 08/12/2007 20:34

I wouldn't worry about it in the least.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 08/12/2007 20:52

i wouldnt worry my dh could get an erection while vomiting wouldnt imagine it had anything to do with the child probably the telly.though dh makes a point of not having ds on him while he has one ever since ds jumped up on him and i quote "stood on my boner" he turned very pale and doubled over.....well if he will watch nigella...hehe
