Using DW's id...lazy. She needs a new set of wheels and we live pretty remote...want's 4x4 as local roads crap - Balfron/Buchlyvie/Drymen area, and new for reliability etc. It'll NEVER go off road (certainly not her driving!) - anyone views on the new Freelander or Honda CR-V - can you get a 5, a 3 and a newborn in the back? Seen the Freelander on lingscars.co.uk - lease seems to work out best vs new???....She's got a dodgy back so lifting IN is better than lifting DOWN (and 3 c-sections!) if you get my meaning... I know I'm killing the planet - don't even think of going there everything else in life is green so leave it.

Not sure but was talking to a friend the other day and she said that the Freelander is getting good reviews now - Clarkson loved it apparently.

Am contemplating a new car atm - have a Golf but have had some problems with it so may trade it in. May get a 4x4 as live in the hills of Budapest and weather can be bad in winter.

no advice but nothing wrong with having a 4x4 is you actually need it.

Not sure about the new Freelander, but you'll need a sence of humer if you get an older one. Take a look at www.landyzone.co.uk.

melie13 - I agree it is fine to have a 4x4 if you need it and it sounds ideal for your DW.

Just for your DW to be aware, there was a thread recently started by a mnetter who had a 4x4 and felt that she received a huge amount of abuse on the road purely because of the car she drove.

There are 4x4 owners who are thinking of getting rid of them solely because of such abuse - usually enountered from self righteous poeple in supermarket car parks!!

There is nothing wrong with getting a 4x4 if you actually need one.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if i needed it.

It's just these people that drive them around town to show off that give them a bad name. They come up with bollocks like 'safety' as if ordinary cars that the rest of us drive round in are death-traps on wheels.

Freelanders always get a good press cos they have such a good pedigree behind them and LR are experts now at making these kind of cars.

One of my friends who lived in London and had one for genuine reasons (for visiting forest plantations that the companies trees were growing in) quite often had stickers stuck on their windscreen and scratches down the side of it from these green fascists who tar everyone with the same brush.

Just ignore it all and get one if you want. There are lots of other things that you can be doing (as you have pointed out) that will make a difference more than this.
