Do you do a lot of short journeys?
Never posted before by the way, I'm normally too busy cooking.

My old Golf used to do this on long journeys. it would just gradually grind to a halt and I'd have to pull over and wait a few minutes, then it would start up and run normally.
Is yours doing this?

Actually, mine used to do that too on short journeys occasionally. Mine was a 1990 1.6 Driver.

Could be any number of things. A friend of mine has an EOS with the same engine used in some of the Golf range. Apparently there is a problem with a part which helps to meet the stringent emissions requirements we have now. If this engine is used frequently for short journeys it causes the car to cut out, which is (allegedly) why they don't sell certain models in Jersey (or Guernsey) or somewhere. Mind you, he does make things up sometimes.....
If you run out of fuel this can dredge up gunk from the bottom of the tank and cause similar problems.

Do not run out of petrol. That is a bad thing to do that is and i hope you have had your wrists slapped for that.

My Golf does this but it is because we have to have an immobiliser fitted for insurance purposes here in Hungary. If any door is opened while engine is still running (i.e. if you stop quickly to let someone out) it assumes we are being car-jacked and cuts out. Doesn't sound like what happens to yours though.
