4 minute mile - possible to train my 33 year old DH?

My DH is 33 and wants to know if he could train himself to run a 4 minute mile.

He is a good weight and reasonably fit. But he has only just started running again and is feeling his age

I said I would post here and see if anyone had any advice. Strangely DH was not satisfied with my simple "no" and accompanying eye rolling...

well, i can do a nine minute mile and have been training 2 times a week for about 8 weeks
and i am 21 so have youth on my side still!!

Notafitnessfreak · 07/07/2007 14:30

No. 4 minute mile is an very face pace . If he wnats to do it he will have to train extremely hard but at his age and not being professional althete I doubt he will do it . Howvever no doubt being a man he will wnat to prove everyone wrong. So let him try but make sure you have insurance on him first

4 minute mile

He'd be better off setting himslef a target to run a marathon in a resasonable time . More fun , better for him and aslo he could feel good about himslef as he could aslo raise alot of money for charity.

His time will be recorded , he will get a medal and he will have a day to remember.

Far better target .

Thanks woopsadaisy and notafitnessfreak very useful advise. DH is going to reconsider his goals

Yes he could do it, but it will be ALOT of hard work, for something that will last for only 4 mins.................

Marathon , or half, is much much better.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/07/2007 19:39

I'd say no. It's very fast.

Health-wise he'd be better looking to be able to run maybe 10k in a decent time. It's long enough to give him a cardio work out yet not too long to give his joints a problem.

LordPan · 07/07/2007 20:03

or 5K..

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/07/2007 20:23

5k's for wimps Pan.

FrannyandZooey · 07/07/2007 20:27

I asked dp, who regularly runs 10k for laughs

he scoffed

(I think this means he knows your dh could do it and he is trying to create a smokescreen)

LordPan · 07/07/2007 23:20

or..or..just swift trot to the shops???

clerkKent · 10/07/2007 13:05

How about a 5 minute mile? If he achieves that, then 4.50 etc. I think a marathon is different altogether.

WinkyGirl · 10/07/2007 20:53

I am liking the idea of the 5 min mile.

DH did do a swift trot to the shops earlier so he is keeping the training up!! Sadly he went there to buy beer. Probably not so good eh?
