Set a budget and stick to it.

Look for low milage cars with a full service history.

Use Autotrader. Set a distance you are comfortable with travelling to look at a car (I'd suggest less than 20 miles), no. of doors, engine size, milage etc, and look through your options.

I'd suggest something Japanese. Hondas are generally bought by older byers, and tend to be looked after, and not driven a lot.

If your spending a fair chunk (you decide what that is!), get an AA or RAC check of the car done before buying.

I buy a sub £1000 low milage fsh car every year or two, and run it until it breaks!

Check whether the car has been in an accident and what parts have been replaced and with what. It is best to stick to cars with original manufacturers parts only that have not be in any accidents because you can't know whether the overall structure had been weakened (advice we had when we were in an accident and told to get rid of the car).
