One of my favourite tries is that one with Barbarians V All Blacks which was started by Phil Bennett and ended by Gareth Edwards.
I do remember seeing the pans on TV, maybe if I go one day I'll take a couple to bang along with during the game.

suejonez · 17/04/2007 15:18

oh yes "the try" it was great wasn't it. Ah the glory days...

nappyaddict · 17/04/2007 19:00

sory BITBBH i didn't mean you were new. i meant that it was a new profile to nosy at as i was saying earlier the only men i'd seen with them were HD, DD and BGD.

DrDaddy · 17/04/2007 19:55

I love going to Cardiff when the Scots are playing the Welsh. The whole town becomes a sea of tartan and red. We try our best to sing along with the "Gwlad gwlads" and the Welsh lasses pretend they don't know what's up a Scotsman's kilt!!

nappyaddict · 18/04/2007 12:48

i live in cardiff its great when theres a match. lovely atmosphere.

suejonez · 18/04/2007 12:49

do you - I went to uni there and tbh is the only place I would go back to Wales and live. Still have friedns who live in Barry. I like Cardiff.

nappyaddict · 18/04/2007 12:53

suejonez · 18/04/2007 12:53

nappyaddict · 18/04/2007 12:55

i don't know - depends if you were there before 1988.

suejonez · 18/04/2007 12:57

nappyaddict · 18/04/2007 12:58

suejonez · 18/04/2007 13:00

BigGitDad · 18/04/2007 16:28

I must be same age as you Sue went to Newcastle Polytechnic 84-88. I love it there.

BigGitDad · 18/04/2007 16:29

Sorry meant to say I went there.

suejonez · 18/04/2007 16:29

I do feel some affinity with you northerners, think its the coal mines (lack of these days?).

suejonez · 18/04/2007 16:30

I remember the miners strike so well. t'was a big deal in our area and the welsh miners held out to the bitter end mostly (daft sods, but I admired their principles)

BigGitDad · 18/04/2007 16:45

Did you mean me as a Northerner? I am from South East London, went to Newcastle as I was advised it was a great place to be a student!
I had forgotten about the miners strike until I saw Billy Elliott in London at the theatre last year. What a show! It brought back a lot of political memories. I used to play rugby against a lot of the mining villages. The players from 1 to 15 were all 5'10, 16 stone and hard as nails.

suejonez · 18/04/2007 16:46

OK tehn "honorary" northener! How did a SEe london boy feel in Newcastle at first? Or (like me) can you not remember that far back

BigGitDad · 18/04/2007 17:53

Very scared! It seemed every Geordie in the Bigg Market wanted to kick my head in.
Being a Londoner and a student was not a good combination. I learned very quickly not to hang out in the wrong places and when to keep my mouth shut so my accent would not be heard. (And I did see a lot of violence up there)
However I played rugby for four years at Novocastrians RFC and they were brilliant and that gave me the chance to meet a few of the locals and not be cocooned in student life. At the time I had quite a few friends outside of student life up there.
I do still miss it now, some of my friends are still living there and I see them when I can but family life takes precedence.
I could go for ages but will not bore you!

UnquietDad · 19/04/2007 09:58

Soft Southerner here who fled to Yorkshire. The natives are quite friendly really! If you can get used to bug tattooed shaven-headed blokes calling you "love"!

BigGitDad · 19/04/2007 10:10

I could quite happily live oop north, lovely scenery and walks (my two dogs would love it), good beer (Theakston XB my favourite) and nice people as you say, much friendlier than here in london. However all the family or down here so not much chance of moving. Will be going up to Ilkley for a weekend to catch up with some friends in May which will be nice.

Norfolkinhope · 06/05/2007 21:02

Are there any women here?

We can tell you know - you wash your hands on the way out. It's a dead giveaway...

Norfolkinhope · 06/05/2007 21:27

For those who love the North, I strongly recommend the somewhat sentimental ballad of those forgotten about miners of old or the Northern version of "Independent Woman" .

Our DKs listen to this before they go to bed and they LOVE it.

God bless Joel Veitch.

MrMariella · 07/05/2007 14:02

yes, UD, you know when you are in Yorkshire. The M1 is cobbled.......

or,

What goes "clipperty-clop, clipperty-clop..BANG BANG..clippertyclopclippertyclop??"

A drive-by shooting in Rotherham.

manuka · 07/05/2007 18:39

You cheeky buggers!! I'm from t'north and I LOVE it up here!! Its very green. the Northern accent does make people sound 'thick' though which always amuses me during intellectual conversations about classical composers for example.
BGD I hope you have a lovely time in Ilkley [bar t'at] !
