Hates washing hands

My seven year old lad has suddenly detests washing his hands. He really hates it.
Yes, it could be put down to being a lad. But he gets every upset when his hands get wet and instantly goes for a towel.
I asked him what is wrong. He says that his hands go itchy in a irritating way. His words.
He has a bath. He has just had one a few minutes ago but was so determined not to wash his hands.
Any ideas?
My wife mentioned taking him to the GP.
Has anyone gone through the same?

Could you get him some soap for senstive skin? It probably wouldn't make any practical difference, but you might be able to convince him it's 'non-itchy' special soap?

Does he have dry skin on his hands? My hands sting and get itchy/sore if I wash them lots. A mild scent free moisturiser may help.
