I suffered from this, I found it helps to think of the air as a thick fluid, very like water, once I had this mind-set the gentle motions of the plane in the air felt like the gentle motions when you are on a ferry.

OH had this problem, which really made it difficult to go away on holiday. Virgin (and I think BA) run 'overcome your fear of flying' sessions, where you go on a full day's course where they take you around a grounded plane, talk about the safety elements and then you go up for an hour's flight in an airliner. Virgin's one ran at Gatwick but I'm sure there will be others.

OH came back cured of a fear of flying. Money well spent.

My husband also did a fear of flying course which really helped. Wouldn't say that he was cured but he's much better although we've not flown much since due to having small children.
The course is a day and there is a short flight at the end, there were about 300 people on the course and only 1 didn't fly.

I tell myself that the pilots have families and are intending to live to an old age! They are a lot safer than many of the idiots you are likely to meet on our roads.
The planes have regular checks by the CAA for airworthiness.
A plane crash is big news- it so unusual. Car crashes are so commonplace that we never hear about them unless it is a major pile up.
A fear of flying course is probably a good idea, but an expensive way of doing it.
