Inspired by another thread that turned into a bit of a bun fight.

But has any dad actually taken their dd into the ladies ? And if so what was the reaction if any ?

My Dad used to take me into the ladies when I was little - I used to find the gent's loos smelly and dirty.

Thanks ruby. My dd is three and burst into tears last time I took her into the gents as she's now realized there is a Ladies loo too.

Do you remember your dad getting any grief for it ?

I am the Mum, but her Dad does take her into Ladies.

I think all the women over there on that other thread are a bit barking :)

Why shouldn't he? She is a girl, she can't go by herself. Mens are dirty and disabled toilets are often locked; by the time you have found a key or a code then it is too late.

HOwever he also places the potty in the aisle in Waitrose when things are desperate. I don't think I would have the neck to do that :) I think the more visable men are as childcarers the better.

No, never. I do remember asking to use the ladies' loos after a specific experience.

Dad had taken me into a gents' loo near a shopping centre (I was about five, so mid seventies) and I had looked into a cubicle where a very dirty, matted old tramp was sitting on a loo with vomit all down him. He started shouting at me and Dad picked me up and we left pronto, I have never forgotten that image of the tramp.

Arf@potty in the isle. And in Waitrose !!!

That's the kind of incident I'm worried about Ruby. Mostly there isn't a problem unless we're out and about. But I dread her needing a pee at some large train station like Waterloo.

Nope. I take her into the gents with me and it makes me laugh to see how many blokes look really uncomfortable with a girl (2.10) in there. You can actually see them willing themselves to piss faster!

Ignorant comment.

MrGin. Do what you need to do for your daughter. Whatever makes life easiest for you both. There will always be somebody looking down their nose at you, sometimes there will be a lot of them.

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 30/05/2012 17:31

No no no. I would never - even fleetingly - consider taking DD into a ladies' toilet.

AThingInYourLife · 30/05/2012 17:35

When women start taking their boys into the gents, I'll be OK with men taking their daughters into the ladies.

My DH takes our DD1 to the men's toilet.

Men's toilets are no more disgusting or unacceptable than women's toilets. And if they are, then men should complain about it, not just walk into a place where women have an expectation of a women-only space.

IslandMoose · 31/05/2012 16:41

I never have taken DD (2.11) into the ladies - as yet there has been no need. Male toilets have always been fine, and I can't think of any obvious reason why female facilities should be intrinsically more pleasant.

PassiveHoovering - YOU ARE BARKING MAD

I took both daughters into the gents on the (many) occasions I was out alone with them, until they were able to go into the ladies by themselves, then I waited outside until they finished.
As an aside to this, I remember out on my own with eldest in my local mothercare while she was still in nappies. (2000) she needed changing, so I asked where the change facilities were... I was then disgusted to find they were ladies only. I kicked up a stink about this, and the Manageress stood on guard outside the ladies until I had finished ... nowadays, most facilities are unisex thanks the gods.
