Ear muffs

I know they wouldn't work and would look ridiculous but could anyone suggest something to stop the wind annoying my ears? I don't want to wear a balaclava as I'm only a fair weather daytime cyclist and I have hearing loss. I want to keep cycling on dryish days in the winter but even a small breeze causes problems with my sensitive hearing impaired ears. Thanks.

I wear a thin beanie type hat under my helmet. It keeps the wind off ny ears.
I am still able to hear traffic.

I do wear a thin balaclava on really cold weather to stop the cold on my mouth but its not that season yet!

I wear a fleece band (so not full hat) unless it's really cold (when it's the hat) - both under my helmet, so while not beautiful, you can't really see them

Thank you both, I'll take my helmet when I go shopping and try out your suggestions. I'll wait until I have the usual dreaded text from my Mother "what do you for C***mas?" and ask for an indoor trainer.

C*mas? Cockmas?

You could ask her for a buff; it would be cheaper...

A few ideas for you, @TroysMammy , some of which might make good Christmas presents!

  1. Cheapo first - a Buff as suggested. If you don't like having the whole thing on over your head, get a cheap/freebie/charity shop one and chop it in half.
  2. I have seen someone with these: https://www.cat-ears.com/ They looked as ridiculous as you'd imagine. But I can imagine they might be just the thing if you have hearing loss. I'd make some out of a scrap of polyester fleece, or jazzy fun fur, as they are mad expensive for what they are.
  3. I love my bone conducting headphones. They definitely keep the wind off my ears (which is what makes me think that the cat ears things would probably work). I use Shokz ones. Expensive option though.
  4. I got a helmet a size bigger than I need, and wear a cycling cap underneath. My fave winter hat is a Chapeau! winter cycling cap. I was going to share a link, but it looks like they have stopped selling. Oh no! So thank you very much for your question, I shall buy myself a spare winter hat off eBay while I still can! I have tried various other winter hats and nothing is quite as snuggly and good at covering my ears as my Chapeau one.

I have an under-helmet hat with ear flaps, something like this https://rockbrossport.co.uk/products/rockbros-windproof-winter-cycling-hat-warm-lightweight-unisex-cap but I don't like it - it blocks the sound too much and my head gets hot and my neck gets cold!

My preferred option is two thin buffs, one over head and ears, one over neck and ears, then I can pull up and down when I need ventilation. I have a fleecy buff I swap to when it's really cold.

You have reminded me @foobio - I have tried similar hats, but found that the windproofing blocked the sound too much and made everything sound weird. I used to do two buffs too, until I started wearing cycling caps. The ones with fleece are really good in winter. Two buffs works well if you have a pony tail too.
