Cycle/Bike for 12 yo Son

What recommendations would you suggest for a bike/cycle for a 12yo DS. He likes to cycle in National Trust parks. Would a foldable bike be better as he uses the train to travel to school and activities? Not sure which brands to go for? Something that can easily transit for Tweens to teenage years...

For the trails a cyclo-cross/ gravel bike. They are lighter than mountain bikes and improve they riding skills because they don't have suspension.

Commuting - I have a Tern P8. Cheaper than a Brompton and it has 20" wheels so can be ridden off road. It is much heavier than a cross bike and not as geared as a mountain bike so riding up hills needs effort.
