I am an experienced cyclist MANY miles travelled MANY sore backsides 😂😂 ive tryed electic bikes & i found them hard to handle with the acceleration !!! so i think that Edinburgh's decision to hire ONLY electic with NO training possibly NO experience of cycling & with NO helmet ( tourist ) irresponsible unfortunately leading to MANY injuries & DEATH

Dunno, I’m not a Lycra clad cyclist, more a fair weather cyclist, and have had no issues going from peddle bike to electric and back to peddle.

Velvet010 · 03/09/2025 19:20

but then on the flip side why would you use them without any knowledge or training etc

tartanhaggis7 · 03/09/2025 19:27

does that mean if your packing to go on hols u have to pack your HELMET !!!

There are now hundreds of thousand of e-bikes in the UK. I doubt most of their owners received any specialised training. Have there been MANY injuries and DEATH as a result? Personally, I don’t find riding an e-bike any trickier than a non-powered bicycle.

TalulahJP · 03/09/2025 19:36

Did you mean to use an apostrophe in the word bike’s (totally misses the point)?

tartanhaggis7 · 03/09/2025 19:38

yeah agree but my point is more for TOURIST'S had a wee drink got to go to the event let's jump on an electic CARNAGE !!!!!!

As a resident of Edinburgh and an owner of both a non e-bike and an e-bike, I'm all for the hire bikes being electric. You are really are over excerating the 'acceleration', and there is no need to wear a helmet when cycling.

If you aren't capable of cycling safely, then please stick to walking

You're not going to fall 30 FEET off a BIKE whether it's electric or not..

They have them and scooters in a city local to us. There's been a few reported accidents but No DeAtHs. I think you're scaremongering a bit.

Aaron95 · 03/09/2025 21:29

Practically every major city in Europe has an Ebike hire scheme of some kind. Many also have Escioter hire schemes. I haven't heard of mass deaths occurring from either.

mummymissessunshine · 03/09/2025 21:34

I love electric bikes. Especially the ones you can pick up outside the station, get to your ultimate destination quicker than on foot or by public transport and leave outside. I don’t carry a helmet with me and I have loved riding a Lime bike. Brings me such joy arriving at the office or a client or meeting a friend for lunch in the City.

I haven’t noticed carnage on the streets as a result so I think OP you are scaremongering needlessly. Enjoy!

ninjahamster · 03/09/2025 21:36

My son and husband use electric bikes. They are really happy either way them. No accidents!

It was annoying me too!

TalulahJP · 03/09/2025 22:02

Between the apostrophe use and the CAPITALS the OP is grinding my gears 😂

Cyclistmumgrandma · 03/09/2025 22:12

I ride an electric bike and also an electric tandem. I didn't need any specialist training and in the 10 years I've been riding e-bikes I don't remember causing any carnage or deaths.

Just finished packing to go away tomorrow, and yes, as I expect to cycle while away, I have packed my helmet.

EchoedSilence · 03/09/2025 22:56

You just need to take CHARGE of the electric BIKE unless you are too TIRED!!!!

tartanhaggis7 · 04/09/2025 15:20

have you ever stopped an pedal assist ebike on a STEEP incline in the wrong gear and tryed to start off again!!!

I don’t much BOTHER with gears when I ride my E-BIKE. I set THE gears somewhere in the middle and adjust the assist level as needed. With sufficient ASSIST, there’s no such thing AS the WRONG GEAR.

tartanhaggis7 · 04/09/2025 17:38

the bike has to be moving before the motor kick's in!!!

Cycling deaths and serious injuries are on the rise in the Netherlands. It is thought due to e-bikes going faster than push bikes and older people using them.
I think 15mph is too fast. I pedal cycle regularly and rarely go above 13mph and I still get there (overtaken by e-bikes whizzing past).

How on earth is 15mph too fast? 20mph in a car feels like you're barely moving, and cars can do a hell of a lot more damage than any bicycle.
