should there be more cycling lanes on smaller roads

I feel like there are not enough cycling lanes on small roads which make it quite hard to cycle in certain areas. It is almost extremely dangerous and nerve racking having a car that comes behind you opr in front of you with no thought on how the car will react.

If the roads are that small where would the cycle lanes go?

If the roads are that small how would cycle lanes work?

They have added markings for cycle lanes on roads near me that basically narrow the driving lane at parts to be not wide enough for a car. That means you need to sit behind the bike until you can overtake, which is fine. However where the lane remains just wide enough to pass the bike, drivers are now giving cyclists a lot less room than they were. They are passing close by while both remain in their own lanes, rather than waiting to pass when they can pull onto the other side of the road. So I don't see the benefit.

As a road cyclist myself, I agree with others that on small roads there is not enough room to have cycle lanes.
I suggest that you get rear and front camera for your bike and sent any footage that you deem as dangerous to the police. Sometimes police do prosecute drivers that have endangered cyclist.
Any vehicle that is behind you, should pass when it is safe to do so as per highway code.
Personally, when a sign of traffic builds up behind me, I pull in on my side of the road, when it is safe to do so for myself, thereby letting the cars pass.

Every time we are on the roads on our bikes, we take our lives into our hands, and I breath a sigh of relieve every time I get home in one piece (and I cycle a lot)

Even some of the bike lanes I use are not fit for purpose with all the debris, sunken drainage covers and poor surfaces.

And before anybody comes on here lambasting arsehole cyclists...I hear you...I am a driver myself too.

I think cycle lanes that are just a bit of paint on the road are pointless, they need to be segregated in some way for safety reasons. In many of our narrow winding country roads, this won’t be possible. I would like to see it become standard practice to have segregated cycle paths running parallel to new link roads between towns and cities, as is the case in the Netherlands.
