I was just sat in my car outside my flat watching my kids play, and saw my 4yo had picked up some kids bike in my and was riding it?!

now I thought she had stabilisers on and her big sis just helped her along abit.
but no she was fully riding a bike by herself with no training no help nothing.
I was in shock. Is this normal ?? She’s never had a balance bike, she’s never had any kind of bike experience nothing.
im baffled ……

Probably not that normal but one of my children did that. Never had a balance bike and then just got on a bike without stabilisers one day and rode it! Bike has been a 4th bday present so it was just as they turned 4. saves a lot of time and effort and bad backs on our part!!

A neighbour gave me one at 4 that their child had grown out of and i just got on it and rode home, one of my sons was exactly the same but the other two😵‍💫 took me hours and hours running behind them. I think like all skills in life it comes easier to some than others, we are all have different strengths and weaknesses 🤷‍♂️

Our eldest did this he was tiny just hopped on a bike that was not his it was a larger size. He had so much confidence we bought him a bike and he used to whizz around the park all of his siblings needed stabilizers.

One of my kids did this. They had bikes at school nursery and she had just taught herself without us knowing. I found out when nursery invited parents in for an afternoon and I saw my child riding around the playground.

Yep. Trying to teach DS 5 and DD3 took bike and cycled off on it!

That's adorable.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 23/06/2024 01:14

Maybe she rides bikes at nursery/school and leaned there? I’m a reception teacher and we have bikes out every day for the children to ride.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 23/06/2024 01:16

That's how we all used to learn to ride bikes. Get on, big push, and go!!

SH23B · 23/06/2024 01:28

I taught myself to ride a bike, got fed up of waiting for an adult to help me. Can't say I have been physically coordinated in any other skills in life though.

Our 4 year old started himself straight onto a little bike no stabilisers when he had just turned 3 and now goes with his big brothers on the river cycle path and our 3 yr twins have just started using with stabilisers they are defo needing teaching. All different I guess

It’s a great skill; one of mine was like that. His older sister struggled for years and was 11 when she finally trusted me and herself. Every child is different.

I have pictures of myself riding my 8 year old sister's bike at age 3. I couldn't get anywhere near the seat so just stood on the pedals.
