Follow me tandem

Currently I take both DC to school/nursery in a trailer. DC1 however is now above the safety line and so we're looking for something different. Initially I thought a wee ride, but I can't see how DC2 could still be in a seat on the back with that (I have looked at front seats but he's pretty big for his age and I don't think I'd be able to see round him properly!). Has anyone used a follow me tandem for one DC with the other in a rear seat on your bike? Or is there another method of traveling with two kids by bike that I've missed (excluding the Dutch cargo bikes that look fantastic but are very expensive)?

We used a follow me with a tandem. The younger one riding stoker on the tandem, older riding their bike towed with the follow me. It works fine, but is very long. Best practice tight bends before adding your children to the bikes. Also needs both children pedalling and holding on.

If you want to leave the bike at school, you'll need to fold up the follow me over the rear wheel. This might interfere with a rear seat. If your younger child is small enough, a seat in front of you might work. These sometimes aren't so good for the adult as people sometimes have to cycle with their knees out wide to make space for this type of seat.
