Does anyone have a child who races BMX?

DD7 has now been to a few track sessions at the local BMX track. She's obsessed (she has been welded to her bike since toddlerhood so possibly inevitable). Now rides her Frog everywhere standing up...

Racing has been mentioned by the club (they're keen for more girls I think). We have no idea about BMX, DH and I are tourer and cycle to work people.

What are we letting ourselves in for if she gets into it? Another parent mentioned a lot of freezing cycloparcs. I don't even know when the main racing season is. Be keen to her from other parents whose kids love it too- how much does it take over your life? She's already asking for her own BMX so I guess that's next.

Mine just took up BMX this year and as far as I understand the main race season goes March/April - August/September (regional, national, european races) with World races in August.
Then the clubs with indoor tracks do winter racing but not for novices this year. Our local clubs get together and do fun races at various times but I don't know how widespread that is.
I'm told you start off at regional level then qualify for other levels depending on how you do. My DC missed the start of this year and has been concentrating on building speed, he's a fair bit older than your dd and has moved from stunt bmx so wasn't ready to join in this year's racing.
Talking to other parents at the track it takes over as much as you want. At our local club there are dc who do world competitions and seem to spend every weekend going here and there and others who dip in and out and just enjoy it. A club local to us has a teen training with the Olympic team for 2023 so it's how good you are and what you want to put in I think.
Be aware though it can get very expensive very quickly.

DC did a bit of BMX racing about 15 yrs ago. We were keen, them maybe not so much (!)

I recall a 2yo completing the course (few pushes from dad uphill)

I found it a nice community and not to onerous, maybe 10 events/year worth going to (would take all of one of the weekend days). I still know someone who ran the club back then. Very family oriented. Also suggest you look at CycloX, but they use different style bikes, so more expense.
