You can do all of that but remember you are still relying on others to afford you the courtesy of avoiding you. Not everyone does. A friend of mine did all that and was still killed by a driver on the wrong side of the road who went head into her at speed

Be defensive. Dont be afraid to take up space instead of hugging the kerb and ducking in and out of parked cars.

Use cycle lanes whenever possible, although a lot around where I live are covered in the muck cleared off the road, which makes them more dangerous than being on the road.

Wear a helmet shouldn't be first - that is largely a defensive strategy against a vehicle injuring you
