How long does it take?

I've just recently bought a bike. I hadn't cycled in 20 years. I'm 35. I've done some 'leisure' cycling' slowly around country parks with kids. Today I did my first 'commute' cycle. 3 miles each way.
I had to get off to push up the hills and my lungs were screaming. My bum is sore.
How long until it gets easier? Or am I too old for this sh**?

It gets easier quite quickly in my experience. Does your bike have enough gears, including one low enough that you can 'spin' your legs going uphill? Have you invested in cycle shorts?

I think this is where I've gone wrong. It's a vintage bike. No gears 🙈
I just have Lycra style shirts. Nothing special.
