Yesterday I planned a route for 24 miles.....I got lost!

So Google maps doesn't have any consistancy if you go wrong (& aren't looking at that exact point) it just recalculates and you carry on regardless and you can arrive at totally inappropriate roads (A12 I'm looking at you!)

So when coming back I looked at Cyclestreets but that didn't work like I expected it, so I went back to google maps and ended up riding back and forth on one road where the direction of travel changed every 30/40 seconds & it kept telling me to go back the way I came (both ways)

& then there was a bridle path than was under water (not googles fault but it cocked everything up!)

So I probably did about 30 miles and I am knackered!

Is there a proper satnav I can use on my phone? That works for a bike and doesn't present me with near motorway versions of A roads or 'styles'

Oh and i fell off! No rhyme or reason just cycling along and next thing I knew I was on the floor - picking myself up and I nearly got knocked over my a car that had stopped for me falling.....I guess I took too long to pick myself up

So I need to get out there again tomorrow or I'll lose my nerve

I find Cyclestreets the best, although it is a bit too keen on sending me through London parks and along canals in the dark. Whereas google maps doesn't give shit about roads or hills and basically treats you like a car. What didn't Cyclestreets do that you were expecting - recalculating, or verbal instructions? Or do you mean the fast/balanced/relaxed options. I usually just flick through them and have a quick scan of where each option would send me. I find the directness of the 'fast' route is often offset by traffic and traffic lights if it's a busy time of day in a built up area.

Just don't do what I did the first time I used CycleStreets and forget to plot a return route for the way home - couldn't work out why it kept sending me down one way streets the wrong way

You can use RidewithGPS or MapmyRide to plan routes and use the apps on your phone. You can also create routes on Strava and use it on your phone to navigate.

Cycle.travel.is great for quieter routes and it lets you plan circular routes.

So the little dot stayed at the beginning when I moved it didn't

My googlemaps has hills marked at the beginning of journeys so you can choose - but then it recalculates part way through and takes ou off on the quickest which is nearly always the busiest

I use Strava. I create my route ahead of time on the pc via their website. Then load onto my phone.

We’re you using the cycle streets app rather than the website? The map on the website is puzzlingly small. The map on the app is screen sized and it tracks where you are, assuming you’ve given it permission to use your location (my experience is on an iPhone).

And you can zoom in and out of the map as you use it

Yep it asked for permission and I gave it but there was around 9 or 10 miles on the screen and nothing moved - at all!!

I’ve recently downloaded an app called Komoot. I used it for the first time yesterday and thought it was really good. It talks to you like a car sat nav. It’s a bit battery hungry but lasted 3h.
