Knee warmers: how high up to wear them?

I've recently got a pair of knee warmers to turn my bibshorts into three quarter lengths. Whilst a good idea in theory, I find they end up sliding downy leg til they've slipped below the bottom of my shorts and on one occasion round my ankle.

I tend to have the top with the gripper on it at mid thigh, do I need to book them higher or am i forever condemned to the Nora Batty look?

As high as possible ime. They only really stay on with something else keeping them in place (like shorts or tights or capri length).

I wear them under jeans when commuting in winter, also under tights for running/winter rides.
