Anyone tried Jumpspeak?

Jumpspeak are bombarding me with content on social media. Anyone tried it? It sounds convincing. But is it?

No. Would it kill you to explain what it is?

HotCrossBunplease · 22/07/2025 00:31

Well since she is looking for answers from people who have tried it, she doesn’t need to explain…

TyneTeas · 22/07/2025 00:34

Unless it is a campaign to get everyone to look it up

faffadoodledo · 22/07/2025 18:48

@TyneTeasits not! I’m a long term poster who is a retired journalist, not pusher of language apps!
@MsAmerica I assumed because I was posting on the Cunning Linguists board that it would be obvious it was a language learning app. Obviously not obvious!
But that’s what it is. Claims to use AI to help you speak. Makes pretty big claims.
anyway, if anyone has any views I’d love to hear them.

There are loads of these apps now. I watched this review before choosing; I can't remember if she mentions Jumpspeak though.

timestressed · 09/08/2025 18:33

Reddit often has good reviews by users of various apps and products

faffadoodledo · 09/08/2025 22:45

@AudiobookListeneris there a link to the review? What did you choose in the end?

Can you not see the little picture of the video? Just click on it, that's the link. In case you can't see it, the reviewer works in the area and looked at several AI conversation apps and Langua came out top. (IIRC she was "learning" Spanish for test purposes). I don't know what they are offering now, but at the time the free trial of the Langua AI conversation mode was very limited, about 12 questions, but that was enough to convince me it would be helpful for the language I'm learning (German).

Ah, thanks @AudiobookListener Weirdly the link didn't show on my phone. I see it now though.
Also, thank you @timestressed and @HotCrossBunplease

As for the other two posters - are you always so suspicious and negative? You've throughly put me off posting anything else in this neck of the woods!

Please don't be put off! Come back and review Jumpspeak if you ever try it. Which language are you learning?

faffadoodledo · 11/08/2025 12:06

French. Last studied in a meaningful way 40 years ago at A level!

It might all come back to you, my O Level French is still there but the Spanish is utterly lost. Anyway, at least you have plenty of options for apps, courses, books etc. with French.

I'm curious about jumpspeak too. But I'm going to try this first

ChatGPT taught me more Spanish in just 8 days than Duolingo did in over 3 years.

Here’s the 6-prompt formula that made it possible: ⬇️

1 | Design an 8-Day Spanish Course

Prompt: You’re my Spanish coach. Develop an 8-day beginner-friendly course that helps me speak basic conversational Spanish. Emphasize practical phrases, pronunciation, and essential grammar.

2 | Make It Stick

Prompt: Act as a memory expert. Turn these Spanish words and phrases into engaging memory aids or associations that I’ll easily remember.

3 | Correct My Errors

Prompt: I’ll send you Spanish sentences I wrote. Fix them for grammar, spelling, or syntax, and clarify the corrections so I fully understand.

4 | Simulate a Real Conversation

Prompt: Let’s roleplay an authentic Spanish dialogue between a tourist (me) and a local. Correct me throughout and keep it relevant.

5 | Teach Me Regional Slang

Prompt: Share 10 slang expressions commonly used in [Spain/Mexico/Argentina]. Explain their meanings and when to use them informally.

6 | Test My Knowledge

Prompt: Create a 12-question Spanish quiz based on what I’ve learned so far. Include questions covering vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.

I have Jumpspeak both the lessons and the full AI version. I bought it to try it for a few months. Honestly I struggle with it.

Lessons - for each lesson you have listening, writing, speaking and conversation. I quickly found I was saying words I didn't understand (by reading them) and the lessons went a bit weird. e.g. a few lessons in someone was taking a coach at night to go and see someone for a massage. I was thinking gosh! I just want to start by saying "A coffee with milk, no sugar please"! I have tried to press on with it but you don't start on basics and present tense then progress you are just in at the deep end with everything. Nothing seems to follow an order, you may learn "4" in the context of a sentence but you don't get numbers 1 to 100 for example.

AI part - You can choose conversations about topics and it will speak to you and then give you a suggested response. If you try to say the response it's ok at picking it up, perhaps 70% of the time it gets what I said by reading the suggest text (even for a simple sentence). If I try and speak freestyle and talk about a topic I want to talk about then it fails to get a lot of what I say. It also gets stuck in a circular conversation. For example this morning I tried to talk about buying some clothes in a store and getting measured but we went from what was my size, to was I sure and had I measured myself to how to measure myself to was I sure of my size. I tried to move on to something simple like "what colours do you have" but it kept reverting back to the size conversation.

I am still trying with it as I don't think I've given it enough of a "go". I am learning Spanish, level B1 trying to reach B2.

What I have found that works:
Duolingo for vocab - I try to complete my challenges each day but don't worry about the league and points. I do this for vocabulary and some grammar.
Preply - I have 2 x 50 minute lessons a week with a teacher. He can understand my Spanish and says that my pronunciation is good, so I don't think Jumpspeak should have so much of a problem.
Chatgpt - I love this! I ask it for exercises where I can fill in the blanks, it will give me a story for my level in English or Spanish so I can translate it. So far not tried talking to it much but I will be trying.

Feel free to @ me if you have more questions @faffadoodledo or anyone.
