Hi,
Has anyone here done the Diploma in Translation? I'm looking to do it in a year or so but wondering if it's a bit beyond me as I've read it's a really hard exam? Any experience?

I did it two years ago and passed but a lot fail. I did an online preparatory course which really helped as the tutor could tell me what the examiners were looking for.
I did all three papers in one day as where I sat the exam you can only do it once a year and I wanted to get it over and done with.
The hardest part (and most unnatural part) was only being able to use paper-based dictionaries and no online dictionaries. I took a suitcase with me full of dictionaries!

Thank you! I am looking to do an online prep course. I'm wondering if my language skills are as good as they once were now though!
Do you work as a translator now?

Amongst other things, yes

I did it 27 years ago (!) and agree with Jinsky that the hardest thing was having to lug a holdall full of paper dictionaries to the exam venue, even in those days when instant online reference resources were still the stuff of science fiction! I had attended an evening course at what was then the Polytechnic of Central London, and the only people to pass from the entire class were the two of us who already worked as staff translators. I have worked as a translator for 30 years, the last 23 as a freelancer. Have you considered applying for ITI Associate membership? It's worth checking out their website - lots of information and advice for newbies.

I did it ten years ago, after an online course. I passed, but yes, the exam was hard. It was difficult to do the work and make a neat copy in the time. I don't work as a translator now, but I do work with language using the translation skills. It's a really nice qualification to have!
