For a dd who is studying it.

We already have Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. :-)

I love Eat Drink Man Woman. Also the Wedding Banquet. I think both by Ang Lee.

If your dd liked Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, she might also like The House of Flying Daggers and Hero.

Thanks Zhx.. I'll have a look at those.

There are other Zhang Yimou films which are visually stunning, but quite depressing! I remember being horrified by Raise the Red Lantern. Gong Li is a wonderful actress though.

Thats quite a good list although agree with zhx3's comments. Are you learning mandarin triggers?

Thanks also buddhas. I'd already looked at lists of popular Chinese films but wanted to get some recommendations. It's DD rather than me learning mandarin (she's in sixth form), but I'll probably watch them too (with subtitles!). She's also doing French and we've been working our way through lots of popular French titles, but I didn't have a clue where to start with Mandarin.

I like the look of Eat/Drink and Wedding Banquet. Might have to work our way up to the Red Lantern.

Thanks again. Flowers

Farewell My Concubine is absolutely brilliant.
It's a really interesting love triangle that involves Chinese history and culture.
