What do you wear to an opera?

I am going to Carmen at the Royal Albert Hall in late February and I have no idea what to wear.

Evening wear?
Trousers and top?

Don't want to be under or overdressed - not sure which is worse!

Smart but not over the top. You are not going to a ball. You are going to a smart party.

Some people will be casual at the Albert Hall.

Smart trousers and top would be fine. A nice frock would be fine.

Smart is the word.

Thanks squeaver, good advice, I will go for the trouser and top.

You can wear whatever you want - there's no dress code!

it depends on where you're going and where you're sitting - anywhere in the albert hall is smart casual but I'd go a little bit smarter in the stalls at covent garden.

You can wear whatever you like and will see every degree of dress from scruffy to very smart.
The thing is to wear whatever you will feel right/comfortable in - absolutely no-one else will bat an eyelid.
