Commissioning - procedure - advice?

dh's 50th birthday is a few years away.

I thought a special & appropriate thing for him would be a commission - music most likely, but it could be dance, or a performance thing - but I haven't the first clue how to start going about it.

Do you decide on a composer/group and contact their agent? Or is there an outfit which lists projects currently in process which you can choose to support? (We don't need to be completely bespoke about this, nor be the sole supporters of something - we just want to mark something that has a existence beyond a birthday. And dh being the vulturist of cultures, this suits him.)

Any and all advice welcomed!

Try approaching the Royal Philharmonic society who would be able to advise.
