Interesting London ideas

I'm heading to London for an event on Tuesday. I decided to make a mini-break of it so am travelling down with my partner today and can do sightseeing tomorrow.

Just wondering if anyone can recommend any interesting exhibitions, places to visit or plays/shows that they've seen recently. We'll mostly be pretty central.

I'm thinking I should have put this question in AIBU or chat for traffic.

Oh yes, 2 Temple Place is well worth a visit.

The Seurat exhibition at Somerset House looks good. Also Tate Britain has its Turner v Constable exhibition about their works and rivalry. Or Tracey Emin at Tate Modern if you prefer more recent work?

If Samurai float your boat, the British Museum is doing and exhibition at the moment (you might want to binge watch Shogun first, but you won't have the time). Actually, I still think the British Museum is a damned fine way to spend time in London.

There are some great City of London walks on line, you can download the maps for free. There are great to follow.

Might the National Portrait Gallery be up your street? I'm particularly fond of the Tudors but really it's stuffed full of interesting portraits.

If you are going here, pop into the Temple Church too.

The Garrick museum is brilliant - old surgical museum

Old operating theatre + herb garret
Fan museum
Leighton House

Denis Severs house and Leighton House are both interesting.

There's a small exhibition on at Japan House in Kensington called Hyakkō which showcases some really beautiful pieces of hand-made tableware etc. It's not a big thing but I spent a very happy hour or so there.

I feel I need to apologise as I have only just seen these replies and am back home now.

We visited the John Soanes museum last time we were down, I had never heard of it but was completely blown away by it. Just completely mad if you walk in with zero expectations.

I'll look up some of the other suggestions next time. Definitely like quirky places to visit.

Where did you end up going OP?

JumpingPumpkin · 13/03/2026 07:25

We ended up visiting the Shard, the Photographer's Gallery, the National Gallery, and doing lots of walking through Hyde Park, Mayfair, along the Thames etc. So many fascinating buildings and sculptures.

I was trying to write more but the app doesn't seem to work properly on my phone now - it keeps hiding the post button if I write to much then telling me I can't change my username 🙄

My favourite gallery probably in the world! Plus a cocktail on the top floor with a great view. What’s not to like?

Oh I was too late! Glad you had a good time.
