Clearing out a friends house for stuff for charity I came across this lovely bowl. Any idea what its made of and is it Japanes or Chinese? Its not expensive I don't think. It had had fruit in which had all decomposed so I've cleaned it and its come up lovely.

Its too nice for the charity shop so I'm keeping it. The friends husband was fine with that. Initially I was going to box it up and send it with a lot of my late Mum's stuff (brass knicknacks, copper candlesticks, pocket watch, coins etc) to be valued at Vintage Cash Cow but I can't let go of it, its too pretty. I think its gold and brass with either enamel or mother of pearl and I think they are either salmon or koi carp? I'm not going to sell it but interested about what it might be.

Any experts please?

The OP has done her friend's husband a huge service in helping clear out the house. As a close friend, it would also be a perfectly normal thing for her to be given a memento from her friend's belongings.

It's a lovely bowl, OP. All I can suggest is the Antiques Roadshow if it's ever near you. Can you walk into an auction house and ask for valuations? Genuinely clueless about this stuff, and very aware that my brother and I will soon be faced with this when our very elderly mother dies.

How weird. The post I was responding to has disappeared with no trace.

Thank you. Me and another lady have been doing the house clearance together for probably the past 3 months. I've also been selling a lot of the equestrian items to friends at the yard and made about £350 so far of which the husband has had every penny.

The grandkids came round earlier and we put sweets on the bowl for them so its certainly getting used. The friend has been so glad of our help and is always saying if there's anything you want just help yourself. Its something to treasure that I can look back on and remember his wife by.

I saw the bowl and thought it unusual. I just thought there might be someone on here who knew something about it. It's quite an unusual design.

Sad someone thought it was okay to criticise. I'm glad the message is gone and I've not seen it tbh.

Happy Christmas everyone.
