Just got a copy of this album for dh and we're all listening to it in the car loads. ds loves it and it really takes me back to my teens. Any other fans out there? I want to know what they're singing. What does it all mean?

My much older brother used to have this and as a child I used to beg him to let me listen to it on his headphones so I could experience the stereo 'car' sound effects! I have v fond memories of it and want to buy it myself! have no idea what the lyrics mean.

rofl i saw kraftwerk in 1975 there was me my boyfriend and 4 other people

Bluestocking · 02/04/2008 13:38

It's great, isn't it?

Lyrics are:
Wir fahr'n fahr'n fahr'n auf der Autobahn

Vor uns liegt ein weites Tal
Die Sonne scheint mit Glitzerstrahl

Die Fahrbahn ist ein graues Band
Weisse Streifen, gruener Rand

Jetzt schalten wir ja das Radio an
Aus dem Lautsprecher klingt es dann:
Wir fah'rn auf der Autobahn...

[English translation:]

We are driving on the Autobahn

In front of us is a wide valley
The sun is shining with glittering rays

The driving strip is a grey track
White stripes, green edge

We are switching the radio on
From the speaker it sounds:

We are driving on the Autobahn

I heart kraftwerk

"Radioactivity" is absolute class

zippi in 1975!! That is so cool!

ipanemagirl · 02/04/2008 13:42

It still sounds so good doesn't it? I'm amazed it hasn't dated exactly, I mean, it's obviously of it's time but it still sounds really good.

Thanks Bluestocking, I love mumsnet - I'll tell my ds who thinks it's "fun fun fun on the autobahn!"

Dh casually mentions from time to time that he would like to call this dc ralf or florian if it's a boy.

I hope he's joking.

zippitippitoes · 02/04/2008 13:48

cant say they were stunning to watch

paint dry comes to mind

ipanemagirl · 02/04/2008 13:57

Florian would be a tough name to shoulder for a little lad!

doggiesayswoof · 02/04/2008 14:04

lol zippi

I think they are better live now than they would have been then

(they have a light show and everything)

doggiesayswoof · 02/04/2008 14:05

I know ipanemagirl. Even as a middle name it's not really on in my book.

zippitippitoes · 02/04/2008 14:06

as i recall they had reel to reel tsape decks

and some sort of keyboard

and just sat or stood there

they didnt say anything

doggiesayswoof · 02/04/2008 14:08

Yes - standing still behind keyboard - there is no "hello glasgow, let's rock" or anything like that.

zippitippitoes · 02/04/2008 14:11

rofl at hello glasgow lets rock

i think dour geek is the profile

ipanemagirl · 02/04/2008 14:13

Four keyboards in a row! It's so not rock and roll!

Autobahn is one of my favourite tracks ever. It's superb for driving long distances in summer twilight...

wishfort · 03/04/2008 08:18

How fab are the men from Kling Klang?

I was lucky enough to see them at the Royal Festival Hall in, was 2005 -or 6. can't remember, but it's the best gig ever. It was the DD's first band, she was only 10 but loved it.
