Poetry Exercise : Favourite Words

spacedonkey · 12/12/2004 23:49

Make a list of your favourite words and incorporate them into a poem. Could be words you love for their meaning, their appearance or their sound. Trawl a dictionary or thesaurus if desired ...

plum trout elf snore mishmash weasel blessing oaf baboon colloquial - that's my brief list, but poetry isn't flowing tonight (milk is though - blee!). Mind you, if anyone could make poetry from that lot...

Have a feeling I'm meant to be more floaty and ethereal about my choice... Blush

xmashampermunker · 12/12/2004 23:55

btw, I love those words for their comedy value - I'm not taking the piss, honest!

spacedonkey · 12/12/2004 23:56

god no, don't restrict it to pretty words!

i'm rather a fan of cadaverous, squelch and bloated

OP posts:
xmashampermunker · 13/12/2004 00:04

Ooh, yes, love squelch! What is it about words like that?!

Guzzle is another I like. Fling too. Words are wonderful things!

I shall write a poem about words.

Oh words are wonderful things, my dear
Just listen, and see what you hear

And see what I hear my dear?
Yes, see what you hear, right here.

But surely that's silly
A folly, my filly
For surely you cannot see words.

Ah that's where you're wrong,
Let's see with this song...

With a sploosh and a splash
And a buzz and a whoosh
A murmur, a whirr and a purr

Do you see now, my dear
How you see with your ear?

Oh yes, said I - onomatopoeia!

xmashampermunker · 13/12/2004 00:05

I haven't written a poem since I was at school! I like it!

spacedonkey · 13/12/2004 00:05

Grin that sounds positively Seussian!

OP posts:
xmashampermunker · 13/12/2004 00:06

It just fell out of my head. I think I'll write more!

xmashampermunker · 13/12/2004 00:07

SD, that's a huge compliment! Thank you!

spacedonkey · 13/12/2004 00:09

seriously, I love that, you've got to do more

OP posts:
xmashampermunker · 13/12/2004 00:13

I used to write angsty stuff when I was at university - would make me Blush to read it now I bet! But I do love words. I'll dig round in my head and see what comes out! (so to speak...!)

spacedonkey · 13/12/2004 00:14

I still write angsty sixth form stuff!

OP posts:
xmashampermunker · 13/12/2004 00:18

I probably could too - but the mood I'm in tonight it would have a rumpty tumpty beat to it and that's just too diabolical for words!

spacedonkey · 13/12/2004 00:19

snurk Grin

OP posts:
xmashampermunker · 13/12/2004 00:21

Oh why have you forsaken me
I carved your name upon a tree
We're meant to be, me and thee
Oh why oh why have you forsaken me.

See what I mean?!

spacedonkey · 13/12/2004 00:24

That would be a great exercise though, write angst in the form of a limerick/ditty hehe

OP posts:
xmashampermunker · 13/12/2004 00:25

Yes, all mixed up! I like it!

anorak · 13/12/2004 08:20

Apologies for not contributing to the current poetry threads - I honestly have tried but my creative juices are pretty exhausted at the moment. I'm frantically busy and I can never write when I'm like this, I need a clearer mind.

So glad the poetry club is thriving though, and I hope to join back in after Christmas, when my life should begin to settle down a bit again!

spacedonkey · 15/12/2004 10:42

Hope life settles down soon then anorak, your poetic presence is sorely missed!

A poem about SpaceDonkey and HunkerMunker meeting up:

"SD? Is that you?" HM said
"I spot a carnation of red!"

"Why yes, it is me,
That's my flower you see!"

(SD, make this a joint effort - I have writers block now! Over to you!).

spacedonkey · 18/12/2004 23:13

aha, leave this with me ...

OP posts:
spacedonkey · 18/12/2004 23:25

... nope, my creative juices have run dry

OP posts:
xmashampermunker · 18/12/2004 23:31

Hope that doesn't 'bode' for a meet-up! Sure it won't though

spacedonkey · 18/12/2004 23:47
