What is the genre of reggae which is basically cover versions of popular songs? I sometimes listen to a pirate station called Mystique and they play it all the time but I've got no idea what to look for to buy some.. any ideas please?

I think it's called dub

There are bands that just do dub style stuff, there's a band that covers Pink Floyd stuff, and there's Dread Zeppelin, who are ace

It doesn't have a name that I know of - just reggae covers! There are some compilation albums of reggae covers but I think those are pretty dodgy to be honest. The 'rockers' style of reggae features some good covers though.

Dub is just stripped down bass and effects-heavy instrumental versions of (usually) regular reggae tracks - originally tacked on to the end of the track to make an extended dance version.

That Pink Floyd album is The Easy Star All Stars - doing Dub versions of the whole of Dark side of the moon. V good. They also did a Radiohead album in the same way.

ooh I'll look out for those

The stuff I'm talking about tho is covers of songs by take that, britney spears, that kind of pop.. sounds cheesy but it's much better than the original stuff.

Mystic fm on 98.1 if you're in/near London - fab stuff

thanks you both

never come across those covers. The originals are not my kind of music but it'd be very interesting to hear how they sound reggae-stylee

will have a tune in to mystic fm and see what it's like!
