What to wear for the Royal Opera House?

Just bought tickets for DH's birthday (a special one) to go to see the opera at Covent Garden, which he's always wanted to do.

What do people wear? He doesn't even have a suit and I don't have anything other than a smart dress! Will it matter? Are we expected to be in posh gear with tiaras and cummerbunds? Or will a smart jacket and trousers for DH and the dress I wore to DD's graduation be ok?

Thank you all for your comments. I’m being treated to a trip to the ROH after illness and as Im on tight budget, thought I’d have to buy some evening clothes. It’s seems like smart trousers and a nice blouse will not be breaking any protocol. Thank you all.

If you enjoy ballet and opera, it’s worth joining the Friends for the discounted tickets to the final rehearsals. Also, the opportunity to buy tickets for performances before they go on public sale.
