I know next to nothing about art - can anyone point me in the direction of an easy-to-understand book/website which explains what the different styles of art actually are (e.g. post-impressionism, Aboriginal) and shows examples of those styles, and which artists do/did which style of stuff, please?
DD2 said the other day that she was rubbish at painting, but was under the impression that if she painted something, it ought ot look like what it actually was, when actually, she'd done something which was more abstract.

Can really recommend "The Story of Art" by Gombrich. Erudite, but really easy to read, a beautiful book.

A very handy little book is The Art Book which is a dictionary of artists and their styles so you can see at a glance what they do.

thanks both of you, looks like an Amazon order is needed - shame I'll have to buy some more books to get the free delivery
