On Desert Island Discs today. This man is so interesting and talented, ordinary and unusual at the same time.

Also I have never heard anyone choose a Fall track on their list. Wow!

Loved the whole thing, came across as a wonderful husband and father. I loved the comment about how no teenager has died of embarassment

suzycreamcheese · 18/02/2007 19:21

missed it and am sorry..
...he choose The Fall - fantastic! ...have been going to see them for nearly 20 years..ahhh!!

i saw really good tv programme presented by him about hobbies...and really warmed to him! a true interesting one off!

TinyGang · 18/02/2007 19:22

So glad you heard it too. I've been interested in him for a while.

I'd just love to have a chat with him...

My god a fellow Fall fan! I've only seen them once though

hey tinygang...
they have played their soundtrack to me life and times...and i truly regard them as this nation's saving grace!

i despaired of many mn musical tastes on some threads i've seen...

ishouldbeironing · 18/02/2007 20:41

Yes I heard it and thought what a lovely man- was so disappointed that Desert Island Discs does not allow listen again as I missed last weeks

Carmenere · 18/02/2007 20:42

Do they replay it on Friday mornings?

ishouldbeironing · 18/02/2007 20:45

Yes they do I think at 9.00am

yoyo · 18/02/2007 20:47

He sounded a very gentle man I thought. Laughed at his description of his wife turning up to go to the club with him and neither of them recognising each other.

TinyGang · 18/02/2007 21:02

I didn't know you couldn't listen again to DDI. Will try to catch the repeat as the children did their best to talk all through it today!

Ah Suzy - most people despair of my taste in music when they hear about the Fall - an aquired taste I guess.

It's so nice to meet another fan. The band must have changed line-up about ten times over the years. Apart, of course from Mark E Smith (he is not appreciated)

tinygang..he's a poet..

and i'll be listening in friday morning

suzycreamcheese · 18/02/2007 21:09

tg..my brother got me book Hip Priest for christmas....a great read..your head goes dizzy at the line up changes and the circumstances!

he's 50 next month you know!

TinyGang · 19/02/2007 10:36

Good lord is he really? Mind you he seems to have been around for ages.

The book you mention sounds most interesting - I'm going to track it down asap, I think. Thanks!

Last week's was Paul Abbot I think, the writer of Shameless? It was so good, but my goodness what a life he's had. I guess that is what informs his work so much, he also has a huge ongoing battle with depression which actually I found quite inspirational

I missed Grayson Perry yesterday darn it. I'll have to remind myself on Friday.

Apparently you can't listen again because of the copyright issues of the records? Perhaps I should go back to taping the radio like I used to in the 70's!!

suzycreamcheese · 19/02/2007 12:30

TinyGang · 19/02/2007 22:45

  1. No, it's just me, Dinosaur, although I do like the Chapman Brothers stuff!

I like The Fall, too - I have a very soft spot for "Perverted by Language".

ArcticRoll · 23/02/2007 14:00

Listened to the repeat this morning.
He came across as a really lovely man.
And yes great to hear The Fall on Radio 4.
Paul Abbott last week was really interesting too.
So glad Sue Lawley has gone couldn't bear to listen to her interviews-very snobby and condescending.

ipanemagirl · 28/02/2007 14:19

Arcticroll, agree Very Strongly about La Lawley. I wrote a complaint to the Hd of Radio 4 about her iv with Vic Reeves - so snooty and sneering.
Missed most of this G Perry interview and was annoyed. I really like him - his work is amazing.
His studio is just down the road from us and it's funny when you see him walking around in full bike leathers - he's a proper bloke! Very masculine - not what I'd expect at all.

Aloha · 28/02/2007 14:23

caught a bit of it while going in and out of the kitchen. Have read an interview with him about his childhood and found it fascinating and was interesting to hear him talk about it too. I didn't realise you couldn't listen again
I would never play The Fall for pleasure, but I used to see Michael Clark dance in the early 80s and he used The Fall constantly, so associate the sound with very exciting, inspirational times. God Michael Clarke was the most beautiful man in the world. And the reincarnation of Nijinsky. And absolute genius. I have never ever experienced anything like his early performances.

JanH · 28/02/2007 14:25

Rhubarb's DH is a Fall fan too, TG and suzy (I think it's fair to say that she isn't, though )

Marina · 28/02/2007 14:28

I'd pay good money to see Rhuby sort Mark E Smith out
I saw Grayson Perry's leathers in a magazine article recently - they are absolutely gorgeous. I don't know a huge amount about him, but like what I know
