Hello, I wonder if you would be interested in sharing your experience as a composer. i write songs and instrumental music but so far I didn't have any luck with the publishers or song competitions.

Fedda, I'm not a composer, but I did work for several years in music publishing. I don't know what sort of music you are writing, but the only advice I would give you is not to focus on getting your music published, but rather on getting it performed. Give your music to friends and associates who are musicians, and see if they enjoy playing it or singing it, send it to local musicians who you think might be interested. You need to build up a "fan-base" before you have any chance of establishing a market/demand sufficient to justify publication.

Thank you very much for your advice, roisin. I'll try to give my music to performers again and see what happens. The problem is that the performers are so often busy learning the repertoir for several years in advice and even when I gave my music to some of the singers who advertised for submissions of new songs they were so full up with the material that it has never materialized. I just feel that whatever I've tried in the past like sending music to performers, film studios, song competitions, publishers didn't get me anywhere. People write nice words about my music in their replies but they always have some reason for not taking it futher like having in-house composers. Thaht's why I try to establish if there are some other ways of getting my music out there and not just feel someone else's pile of scores.

Any more thoughts of composers' opportunities, please?

What kind of music are you composing?

fedda · 21/04/2007 17:47

I write songs and instrumental music. I tend to prefer the positive things in life - love, romance, hope, charity.

My music is based on melody and is gentle and romantic. My music could be used in theatre/stage, cinema, radio play.
