a review for Expat and other fans
saw her in Bristol last night, and it was uneven, i'd say
It took her about 4 songs to warm up, she does have a fantastic voice live though, but there was something missing from the performance, maybe it was the wrong venue for her, or it was an off day, but most of her songs from her last CD didn't sound as good (she does love to change the melody a LOT, which is fine to a certain extent but I thought was over the top in several songs). She did 'La Javanaise' (an old Gainsbourg song) brilliantly though, that was the highlight for me (and her french is excellent). Several news songs which were OK to very good. Band was good but again there was an energy missing there.
mmm
I enjoyed it but I guess was a bit disappointed as I expected more passion....
Laughed at dd who came along, enjoyed a lot of it then fell asleep, and when we woke her up at the end she said:'oh, is it finished already? That's a shame!!!'

I am not sure about MP although I love her version of Dance Me to the End of Love...are you going to rampage around Mumsnet rubbing all our noses in our comparative lack of getting-out-and-about opportunities then Madame
Next you'll be telling me you saw the Pet Shop Boys at the Tower of London last month...

Oh, Lily!

Think of it this way, at least you were spared the Birkenstock thread last night.

'How long should Birkenstocks last?'

Quote of the week: 'They'd last about 10 seconds in my house, b/c I would put them in the bin.'

LiliLaTigresse · 11/07/2006 15:33

lol Marina
look, to compensate I'll admit to seeing the awful Lesley Garrett on Saturday at the Clifton prom style concert and fireworks
we went with friends for the picnic opportunity and fireworks, but had to endure that madwoman and get rained on from time to time
it provided a great laugh though when her hardcore fan base went to tell a couple off for getting up to dance at one point.....
she has rather sad anal fans
and she is so unfunny

to console myself i had to buy The Very Best of Nina Simone.

LiliLaTigresse · 11/07/2006 15:35

sounds like a classic expat
it wasn't a bad gig, it just wasn't as good as I hoped, because I find her voice very moving, and the voice was there but not the emotions, at least not all the time
I would give her another try though

I meant the thread sounds like a classic, Nina Simone is a classic

I've always felt there's a real aura of desperation about Lesley Garrett . And her fans must have TIN EARS these days.
I feel much better knowing you have endured that experience as well as the bliss of the Divine Comedy.
non-Albert Hall "proms" anywhere are dodgy IMO. Dh contracted salmonella at the one in Manchester...a warning to us all.

expatinscotland · 11/07/2006 15:37

Birks, however, are not.

There have been some terrible fashion disasters here on MN recently.

LiliLaTigresse · 11/07/2006 15:39

her fans were all rather old, so I guess they need an urgent ear examination
rather enjoyed the young violinist from Clifton College at the beginning though
the background is very pretty at Clifton College you know, and we had an excellent picnic, and some fun when my friend's daughter went to the portaloos and opened the door to one of them only to find a man sitting there...

expat I often refrain from posting on style threads as I would probably sound quite insulting if I did..... [insufferably arrogant emoticon]
birkenstocks are unforgivable in my book

I did see one 50ish year old lady wearing them w/a hippy skirt the other day.

She looked allright.

If you avoided looking at her feet.

Which was impossible to do b/c, hey, those are some ugly shoes.

LiliLaTigresse · 11/07/2006 15:52

hehe....
Have to go get dd and friends now, see you later expat
