Did anyone watch the final, what did you think of the result?

I didn't watch (saw the end and other bits) it all but thought the guitarist was fantastic

MeAndMyBoy · 20/05/2006 21:07

I was a bit disappointed with his recital - his semi final was fabulous. Was very suprised with the result did think that the percusionist might win he was fantastic.

can you tell me who won .. I saw most of the final but not the important bit at the end! was very much hoping that it was the guitarist but guess not looking at earlier posts....x

MeAndMyBoy · 23/05/2006 10:32

It was the clarinetist (sp) who won. I was very pleased for him but suprised.

thanks for that . I am a bit surprised too but pleased for him as he seemed so "ordinary" which is rather nice iykwim ...

MeAndMyBoy · 24/05/2006 10:42

Yes agree completely :) that was exactly how I felt when he won the semi.

I work in the sector and everyone agrees he was the standout and a deserved winner, who is likely to go on to major achievements. He already has a notable additional reputation as a composer. Very pleased for him and his family :)
Can't help always liking it when an Ordinary Joe with a stunning talent triumphs as a lot of hot-housing does happen in music education.

tortoiseshell · 24/05/2006 10:54

I didn't see the concerto final, but I liked the clarinettist in the instrumental finals. I also liked the trumpeter, and thought it would be between those two.

I really DIDN'T like the dumbed down presentation of the instrumental finals though - starting with only using the players' christian names to introduce them - very like 'Pop Idol' - to making stupid comments like 'Cordelia has been practicing very hard' - well I would be surprised if she hadn't!

Also, a bone of contention with me - organists are allowed to enter, yet at the time of entry the Sage was specified as the venue, and it has no organ! Slight disadvantage there...

tortoiseshell · 24/05/2006 10:55

marina - agree about 'hot-housing' - I thought the saddest point was when the little russian violinist said 'It's a competition, so obviously if you don't win you have to cope with the embarrassment', which is SO typical of music competitions! I liked the winner's 'normality' too.

foxinsocks · 24/05/2006 10:56

the clarinetist was very sweet and the absolute spit of his dad (who looked like he would burst with pride at the end)

MeAndMyBoy · 24/05/2006 11:39

I loved his composition he played in the Semi. His parents were so so chuffed for him when he won and showed it which was great.

That does sound really silly to book a venue that doesn't have an organ!! Agree that the dumb down presentation was inappropriate.

Did feel for the Violinst put under that sort of pressure at 14!! and she was so disappointed with her performance when she'd finished as well. But I guess that is how it needs to be if you want to be the best and achieve great things.

am v.cross I missed all of it as working the whole week and am a clarinettist so would have loved to see it all

have been given the rundown by my friends now as well as one who works with one of the judges.

good point about the organ Tortoiseshell!

warthog · 23/06/2006 21:24

presumably if they'd had an organist apply, they would have traipsed to another venue.
