I have just started an Access to Higher Education course and my Social Sciences tutor has given us a book list. I was wondering if any of you lovely, kind and generous MNers had any of the following books that I could borrow and return or buy :

The Wild Boy of Averyon - Roger Shattuck

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists - Robert Tressell

1984 }
Animal Farm }
Down and Out in Paris and London } George Orwell
The Road to Wigan Pier }

Knowledge of Angels - Jill Paton-Walsh

I hope someone can help as the books I have to buy are quite expensive and now I'm a student (giggle) I will have to watch the pennies. Thanks for the help

I could lend you 'Knowledge of Angels'. Might be able to lend you others but am currently on frosty terms with dh, so can't ask him...give it 20 minutes...

Coathanger · 30/01/2006 21:24

ooooooooo, Fauve you star hoping the thawing process is beginning......

Yes, it was quick tonight...But we have no George Orwells in the house except my A Clergyman's Daughter - apparently dh read his brother's copies, so we have none of the ones you want . But I'll lend you the Jill Paton Walsh, unless some real culture vulture offers you the lot

Coathanger · 30/01/2006 21:33

Oh Fauve, that would be fab! CAT me your address and I will send you the postage.

Fauve · 30/01/2006 21:44

OK - but just send some stamps to cover the outward postage when you return the book IYSWIM. It's fab - enjoy it!

Fauve · 30/01/2006 21:45

Oh, so that means you need to CAT me with your address!

Coathanger · 30/01/2006 21:47

Coathanger - got your CAT, book's in the post (well, it will be tomorrow). You should do a link to this thread on the 'Bookshelf must-haves' thread - was going to do it for you but thought that you might prefer to do it yourself...

SoupDragon · 01/02/2006 08:21

Coeee! Coathanger!

Marina · 03/02/2006 11:20

Fauve steered me this way coathanger but I can't help with any of these except the Paton Walsh, which she has already offered you
Erm, have you checked the college library for the Shattuck and Tressell btw?

spacedonkey · 03/02/2006 11:23

Spacedonkey - The first link worked fine (and I will be looking at that in more detail in a mo!) but the second didn't work

I am reading The Da Vinci Code right now, and it is great, really getting into it! And just finished the Bell Jar which was very moving and I actually found myself crying at one point
