Symbols in paintings

Does anyone know of a good book that would help to interpret the symbols in paintings? There was a SHE magazine article a few months ago and I think there may have been a recommendation but I have carelessly recycled it.

I think there's an open university book called 'How to read a painting'

Wot symbols do you mean? Semiotics?

Do you mean this sort of thing ?

Thank you Monkeytrousers and Gladbag. I have looked at the Amazon link and the other recommended reads that are suggested on there. There seem to be loads so I will plough through and see which best suits my needs. I want to be able to "read" paintings as on a recent visit to the Tate I was all too aware of this huge gap in my knowledge. I was listening to an old chap talking about a painting and he was fascinating - I would love to be able to do that for myself and my children. I should probably have asked him to recommend something but didn't have the nerve! Thanks again.
