Couple knocking at our door - Lost IPhone

Last night around 2am, a couple start ringing our door bell and banging our door, stating they have lost their iPhone and their iPhone location shows it is at our place. We dint open the door but they kept insisting, then swearing and then abusing stating that the IPhone is in our house. We call up the police and explain them what is happening, also inform the couple that we have got the police involved and gave them the reference number. The iPhone couple then leave and are back again after 10 mins and start abusing, banging the door and ringing the bell. They threaten that they will break the door and knick us if we don't give the phone. They say they are damn sure the phone is with us since this is a shared accommodation ( which it is not, we are a family with 2 young kids). The Iphonr couple then realise we have cameras on in the house and then disappear again to be back again in 10 mins. This time the women says, she means no harm and she lives down the street and wants her iPhone back. We politely ask her to leave since she is trespassing and get the police involved if she suspects we have the phone. They roamed around the street waiting for someone before they disappeared and haven't been back since morning. My children are obviously very petrified. Needed to understand if this is a scam. We obviously have nobody's iPhone. The women was extremely violent.

Very popular scam.

they have one iPhone in one’s pocket and show the location on the other phone so it does look genuine / in your house. They then either rob you or use it to scope out the house and return later. It’s part of a theft crime.

This happened to me.

A young couple knocked at my door. She had left her iPhone in a cafe and it was showing as at my house. As I talked to them on the step, it started to move...just as my neighbour's car drove past! So they ran to their car and followed her. High drama.

The phone was definitely showing as right in the middle of my house though.

Fucking hell. It's getting so you really fear helping anyone!! Did the police actually turn
up?

TemuSpecialBuy · 15/07/2024 19:42

Jesus what is wrong with people?

Sorry this happened to you and good you had the presence of mind to reprot to the police.
Your poor children

Presumably they do it at 2am so people are disoriented
Such scumbags.

That's awful!!! In the middle of the night too! Were the police helpful?

I called them twice, they said they would be sending someone but no one landed coming. They called me this morning and stated they were short staffed hence couldn't send someone. Also stated maybe it was a case of mistaken identity. Why would someone bang at my door like hooligans trying to retrieve their iPhone, without getting police involved. Assumingly according to them I am a thief, why would they put themselves in danger by banging my door in the middle of night. Makes no sense at all.

I think sometimes it does not show up at the exact location so it may have been found by one of your neighbours. If they waited around and came back it is probably not a scam especially if they thought the police were called.

But why would they come to retrieve their IPhone from a probable thief without police help.

No they didn't.

Because they were angry or because they know that a lot of people would just give back the phone to get rid if them or to stop them calling the police.

I don't like the police so I wouldn't call them to get a phone back.

The police aren't going to come out for a stolen iphone.

That being said in this instance it's quite likely it was a scam.

Which makes sense. Then where did they disappear the whole day today, they should have come back looking for their IPhone, wouldn't they. Hopefully they were genuine any no scammers. They targeting our house, makes me extremely worried. Also why did they keep saying this is a shared accommodative. How would find my phone app give them the information if this is a shared accommodation or a family accommodation.

The police would be no help they would not come to your property if they reported it. They may have been out and left it in a pub or taxi not a nice time of night to scare anyone by knocking on though.

DatingDinosaur · 15/07/2024 20:57

They (the Police) should come out to a report of someone being aggressive and threatening at 2am though.

You would hope so if you had someone turn up at your door being aggressive at this time.

Because the police won't go for the very reason you were accused by the woman at your door. The phone trackers aren't accurate enough.

My phone regularly shows me as being at my next door neighbours.

The police turning up wouldn't make any difference. Even if the phone is showing as in your house the police have no grounds to enter your premises & there's not a chance in hell of getting a warrant so it's a waste of time.

We regularly get people phoning 101 up for this very thing. They think the police are going to go with them & retrieve their phone. They're not.

My Mum had someone at her door a weeks ago who had a better approach & explained their phone was showing as being at her house & asked if by any chance she'd found a phone. They actually went round all her neighbours, obviously realising its not exact. No idea if they got it back mind you b
