Weird vehicle break ins

Since moving house around 6 months ago we'v had both had our vehicles 'broken in to'
Mine was a few months ago. My partners last night.

It's a fairly nice part of greater west London, so not hugely expected.

The weird thing is both times they have emptied the middle console bit and taken change/ thrown stuff everywhere etc. but have left fairly valuable items. I had around £100 cash very visible in the glove box that they left. My partner had AirPods and an iPhone in the door side. They haven't really taken anything.

Both times the cars haven't been damaged, so not sure how they are getting in.

Also both were parked in full view of our ring doorbell which hadn't captured anything!

On the ring doorbell I can even see my partner's passengers door is shut around 6pm last night when he came home. This morning when I drive off around 7am it is slightly open. But nothing is captured when I play the footage of the whole night. Even though it is in full view.

Last night they dropped a tobacco pouch in his footwell, so we will give that to the police.

It's all seems so weird. Is it kids? The theft makes me think kids. But how are they getting in? And not being captured?

When I reported mine to the police they said they can open cars and block door bells remotely. But who's doing that for some coppers!? I don't get it!

Following as my mum had this recently - threw stuff around car, left all the tech and just took the car park change, and window was down but no other damage to car. We were baffled.

On the ring doorbell, I find mine is really intermittent on what it records.
Yesterday a friend came round. I needed to check the footage for a different reason, thinking my friends visit would have triggered it. But there was no recording of her visit…I had let her in so I know she had walked past the camera!
Hopeless really!

Could a squirrel or rat be getting into the car and making a mess?

I'm in the midlands and have had similar happen. How strange.

This happened to us a few months back. But we're up in Northumberland. Left expensive sunglasses, DHs laptop and other bits and bobs but they chucked everything around, moved the seats, nicked the chargers and DHs vape. Annoyingly our camera shows the cars bonnet in clear view but not the doors so we know car hasn't been joy ridden or anything but just didn't capture the scruffs breaking in.

But, all that said, there is a known thief around here. I have no idea how he operates but everyone knows who he is, nearly everyone has had things nicked by him (he posts it on FB selling sites) and he's been knocked into next week plenty of times, threatened and arrested multiple times but he somehow just keeps going...

Are they looking for drugs stashed in cars?

I think most squirrels or rats vape these days not smoke.

I am in Dublin and I swear someone was at my car the other night but I turn my phone off going to bed so my doorbell does not record. The door felt open when I went out there and the glove box was pulled down but the set of keys (not to the house thankfully) were left as were a pair of designer shades, a coin purse with about 20 euro coins for tolls untouched but the tub of chewing gum gone. Bizarre.

Do you have a keyless system on the car? If so you might want to think about where and how you keep your keys. The “culprits” might be after parts, especially catalytic converters or other hard to get parts as there’s a shortage globally.

shearwater2 · 06/02/2024 10:34

If they bother to jam key signals and the like they usually steal the whole car.

Camdenish · 06/02/2024 10:38

We are close to you and the same thing happened to us. They stole loose change. Nothing to steal in the car anyway but they threw stuff around, they were looking for something.
