Handbag just been stolen what do I do?

Salt14 · 23/10/2021 03:27

Ex boyfriend just knocked on door. No nasty break up or back story.
When I opened the door he grabbed my handbag from behind me in the hallway & legged it.

What do I do?

Hope someone up to advise.

He's not answering his phone.

Do I call police or not? WWYD?

It's not the stuff in it, have cancelled all my cards. It's the bag mainly.

My favourite Cath Kidston print that is v rarely up for sale second hand Sad

I would text saying give it back within 1 hour or I am calling the police

Cascascascas · 23/10/2021 03:46

@Salt14

Call the police

NiceGerbil · 23/10/2021 03:51

Police
Change locks asap
Covered by insurance?
Look for bag on eBay etc

What an utter wanker.

ThirdElephant · 23/10/2021 03:52

Cancel your bank cards immediately. Then contact the police. You'll need a crime reference number in case he steals money- the contactless limit is now £1.

ThirdElephant · 23/10/2021 03:52

*£100

Fetarabbit · 23/10/2021 04:02

That's seriously weird behaviour, do you have any inclination at all as to why he might do it? Was he drunk? Could it be a cynical ploy to force you to make contact tomorrow and arrange to meet (has be indicated he wants to give it another go)? As you've cancelled your cards etc at least that's done just in case, I would phone the non emergency police number if he isn't answering his phone and log it, just in case, and hopefully it won't and probably is unlikely, it forms a pattern of behaviour. Plus he's stolen your bag which is not acceptable!

rrhuth · 23/10/2021 04:05

Yes you tell the police.

What very strange behaviour.

Sorry, didn't see you'd cancelled your cards.

Deffo police now then.

I tried that first. Gave him a chance.

Text him as he still wouldn't answer phone saying I'd give him an hour.

Now reported to police.

Thank you for all your replies. I'm sad it's come to this and feel awful for reporting it, not to mention a bit embarrassed at what police might think. But he's taken the absolute piss. Is very out of character though. Can't work out why?

Thank you.

Good idea about household insurance. Will look into that.

The search for that print is still saved on my EBay account 🤦🏼‍♀️ I'm that obsessed with it. Not seen this style bag come up in years

Calling the police is the right thing to do. At least you know who stole it although I doubt they will be able to recover it. I'm guessing it is your word against his unless you have any witnesses?

Salt14 · 23/10/2021 07:27

@NiceGerbil luckily keys weren't in it.

OP posts:
Salt14 · 23/10/2021 07:29

Hadn't thought of that @ApolloandDaphne
Just assumed police would take my word, but you are quite right. No evidence or witnesses Sad

Call 999 and say you've been burgled. If you call 101 literally nothing will happen. I'm waiting for police to act with DS who aged 14 has taken my car and crashed it. Police haven't even attended yet and this was 3 days ago. I think the only thing you can do is cancel cards and maybe get a doorbell camera in case he tries anything else. Police are not able to protect us due to how badly funded they are.

gamerchick · 23/10/2021 07:31

He probably knows how much you're into that bag. Glad you've rang the police.

Salt14 · 23/10/2021 07:31

Don't want to get him in trouble really, though it is so low in priority for overstretched police resources.

Just want my bag and purse back!

Has my meds in too. Have enough to get by but such a ball ache to try get more, argh, just thought of ball ache all round really, new cards 💳 etc. FFS.

What a dick. Just keeping he'll wake up at some point today and realise what he's done

If our if character is he on drugs? I’d still call the police. Very strange behaviour.

seven201 · 23/10/2021 07:34

Check if any of the neighbours have a doorbell camera that shows him without them with bag.

Salt14 · 23/10/2021 07:36

I did think of that @ThisIsNotARealAvo but I didn't want to waste police time, especially on a Friday night/Saturday early morning.

I did ask if police could go to his house but 101 just said that unfortunately they were just too busy.

I am thinking that could be a possibility @gamerchick that he's on something. He does have schizophrenia but saw him in week and he's had his meds by injection. I can tell if he hasn't. So it wasn't that

Salt14 · 23/10/2021 07:38

He's clueless about my addiction to bags @gamerchick

At least he was until I told him why I'm so desperate to get bag back in a text before I called the police 🤦🏼‍♀️

Hope you get it back @Salt14. Did you tell the police it's out of character and he has schizophrenia?

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 23/10/2021 08:03

What a strange thing to do, hope you get it back soon!

Fetarabbit · 23/10/2021 08:40

Did it have your house keys in?

SpringSparrow · 23/10/2021 08:48

Which Cath Kidston print is it? Also a Cath Kidston fan, possible someone might have a similar bag lying around unused. Also I wonder if his schizophrenia has something to do with it, maybe he needs some mental health help? How long has he been an ex?
