Stranger entering house?

DarkestBeforeDawn · 20/05/2021 21:34

Ok so for the last two weeks, I have come home and discovered items in the house that do not belong to us. First a glass and this week a mug. Never seen them before and we have only lived in this home for about 18months. These incidents coincide with the day the cleaner comes to our home and we leave a key out front for them. I have spoken to them and shown them pictures and they do not recognise them as items that they have brought in themselves from home. Has anyone got any advice or suggestions about this please? It has really panicked me that a stranger is entering our home.

Where do you leave the key? Is it in a keysafe? I think I’d be changing the locks & getting a keysafe as minimum measures.

Gunpowder · 20/05/2021 21:40

If you trust your cleaner I would cut them a key and stop leaving one out! Or fit a doorbell that films everyone who comes to the door.

Gunpowder · 20/05/2021 21:41

Yes would also change locks I think...

Theunamedcat · 20/05/2021 21:41

Ring doorbell or internal camera? Is she bringing her partner in with her

Springchickpea · 20/05/2021 21:44

Absolute madness to leave a key out; just get a key cut for the cleaner.

Minimum Whoever does this obviously deliberately does it on the day the cleaner's been.

Have your neighbours seen anyone?

Aquamarine1029 · 20/05/2021 21:56

I would be suspicious that your cleaner is bringing someone with her or letting someone pop in while she's there. You need to get cameras set up, asap.

Soulstirring · 20/05/2021 22:00

This would creep me out no end. Order cameras straight away, change locks and stop leaving the key out.

Noshowlomo · 20/05/2021 22:03

Creepy! Deffo think it’s cleaner related

PineappleWilson · 20/05/2021 22:04

I wonder whether the cleaner brings somebody with her, daughter or husband. Presumably it'd be in breach of her contract; it would be interesting to see if it stops now you've flagged it. Would agree about a Ring doorbell as you'd see the 2nd person enter.

DarkestBeforeDawn · 20/05/2021 22:10

Well I'm definitely not leaving a key out again and going to install a camera. We live in a very safe area...car doors unlocked, houses unlocked type of place so it has never crossed my mind to not leave a key, and the cleaner has all her clients do the same as safety just hasn't been a concern, until now. I have wondered if perhaps the cleaner has been coming in and enjoying a drink and lunch break at my house, then forgetting to take her belongings and is afraid to admit this but my god this has got me so freaked out!! I have emailed a picture of the mug to her and said that I would be calling the police to report my concern if it wasn't her, so I am hoping if it was her, this will prompt her to admit it and I can rest easy.

Why would she be afraid to admit that, though? She wouldn't have been doing anything wrong. Accidentally forgetting a mug is no big deal whatsoever, we all do it occasionally.

Aquamarine1029 · 20/05/2021 22:23

Where did you find the glass and mug?

DarkestBeforeDawn · 20/05/2021 22:28

Washed on the drainer!

I also think the cleaner probably brings someone with her, maybe panicked now that you (may) have clocked this so denies all knowledge of the items Confused

DarkestBeforeDawn · 20/05/2021 22:39

I really hope so because I can't get flashbacks from 'sleeping with the enemy' when he straightens the towels, out of my head 😳

Why would the cleaner having a drink or break at your house be an issue?

Sally2791 · 20/05/2021 22:47

@darkestbeforedawn- me too! That scene is so scary

DarkestBeforeDawn · 20/05/2021 23:02

That's the thing, I couldn't care less if they brought their own mug and had a cup of tea so not sure why they would hide the fact!

Justilou1 · 21/05/2021 01:56

I would simply set up the camera anyway. See WTF’s going on.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 21/05/2021 02:32

Why would the cleaner be bringing cups into your house and leaving them there though??

DarkestBeforeDawn · 21/05/2021 12:20

Issue thankfully resolved and not in the dramatic 'I have a stalker' kind of way! The cleaners had been in a previous client's property and while cleaning upstairs had brought downstairs the mug to be washed but put it in their cleaning supplies bag. They then forgot about it and came to my house. The other cleaner (they work in pairs) thought it was from my house when in the supplies bag and so washed it and put it on the draining board!

Hahahaha
Thank god
