Okay so I'm posting this here as I am hoping for some sort of comfort. I've recently moved into a new house on my own with my toddler. I delayed moving as I needed to paint and buy furniture, so today as my bed was put up, I decided it would be my first night at the new place. As I got to the front door I noticed a random screwdriver hanging out of the window, together with marks at the side of the window. I knew instantly that someone had tried to break in but failed. I rang the non emergency police number and informed them, sadly as my father in law removed the screwdriver from the window while I was on the phone(he was helping me move), forensics team couldn't get any dna as it had already been tampered with. I was soo nervous and anxious the whole night thinking the person would return, however they didnt(thank God). I've ordered a ring bell system to provide extra comfort. Landlord says the thief could have seen the house empty for a while plus the box I was using to cover the window in the front room, indicating it was empty.
Anyone else had a burglary or an attempted one?

I think the main point here is that the would-be thief tried to get in and FAILED. Which says something positive about the quality of your windows.

Order some window stickers saying 'You are on CcTV', and get an outside light with a movement sensor installed if there isn't one.

Check the quality of your door locks. I'm a single mum, live with my DS, and had someone try to open the French windows in the kitchen last winter. They failed (and snapped their screwdriver Smile). They haven't bothered coming back.

Just remember to check doors are locked before you go to bed, and enjoy your new home.

Thanks so much for your response. After your advice I have put up cctv stickers.

I'm glad to hear that the thief didn't manage to break in to yours either. It's just so terrible that these things can happen. Hoping this was just one failed attemp.
