Editing your own writing ...

I'm trying to review some of my own writing, but worry I'm not really seeing it, iyswim. I print it out sometimes, and that seems to help, but gets expensive and tiresome. I'm thinking about writing it out again by hand, or reading it aloud ... any other ideas?

How about changing the font, making it bigger, bolder, smaller, or different in some way??

I know what you mean, the only thing that helps for me is printing it out, or leaving it alone for a while. Which is obviously too time-consuming, though a handy aid to procrastination

Reading aloud is good, though. Or if you're brave and have someone handy, let them read it back to you.

Otherwise, I find if I write and then don't read it for a while it is much more of a surprise to me and I can be more objective. I am someone who is constantly getting entrenched in the quagmire of reading some preceding passages to 'get started' and ending up rehashing them forever. Above method can be a hurdle to consistency, though. Tend to assume it will all come out in the wash.

I have issues with producing longer works - I've only just managed to produce my first piece longer than 1500 words (and that piece was for an assignment, and felt really unnatural, tbh). Good ideas, here, anyway. I do have a few people I can use for feedback, but will try you sometime, OMaLittle, but I figure most of the revision really has to be down to me ...

I agree with what others have said. Reading aloud or leaving it alone and going back to it after a few days are tricks that work for me.
