Anyone else doing this? I have to write about another 30k words for my second book. Non fiction. First is published with a specialist publisher and they asked me for another. So please hold me accountable 🙂🙂

I've done Nano for the last few years.
I'm in two minds about whether I bother with the actual set up because of the stuff that went on last year, but I'm planning on trying to write 50k words in November.
I'm in a couple of groups which are doing it, but not as Nano, so they'll keep me on track.

What I try to do is get stuck well in for the first few days then make sure I add at least a sentence a day. That way if I have a day or so where I don't have much time, I don't feel I'm falling behind too far.

HundredAcreOwl · 28/10/2024 23:44

For the same reasons as @MargaretThursday I won't be doing it through the nanowrimo.org site. I'm not even sure that's functioning well atm, the lead-up is not the same as in previous years, and although I've not checked more than a few forums, there seem to be no 2024 posts, it was usually buzzing by now. I can see no events, again usually many by now.

The MLs of the 3 regional groups I was with - London, my county, Elsewhere (so online) have all left, but all are continuing their discord space and continuing what they felt was good about NaNoWriMo, without being part of the NaNoWriMo organisation. Even the GWIC - Global Write In Crawl, a virtual train journey hosted by MLs in various countries, and this year taking in Ankh-Morpok, Narnia, Forgotten Realms as well as Japan, England, Scotland has separated, on discord again. Looking forward to that 😊 The sense of community is very much still there in all of those 😊

Accountability? Happy to do so! I have some short stories to write before early next year, and other stuff, I need to stop procrastinating and get back to writing daily 😊

nevertrustanyoneagain · 29/10/2024 12:21

I haven’t heard of GWIC I will look that up thanks. I need to do about 1k a day to finish. Deep in research at the moment and have about 7k done. I need to submit by end of year 😱.

Can someone give am idiot's guide to what happened last year?

nevertrustanyoneagain · 29/10/2024 13:02

I would love to know what happened too. I noticed the GWIC is on Discord so don’t be joining that.

I don't know the full ins and outs, but safeguarding issues with young writers and their board, according to an ML I 'know' unacceptable requests were made of MLs, an apparent reluctance and delays in accepting that there were a number of issues including I think racism, acceptance of AI generated writing.

Yes, the regional groups I'm in have all moved exclusively to Discord. Do you not like it? I'm still definitely wearing L plates for it, and had to get our AC in her late twenties to help, despite regarding myself as computer savvy!

marginallyawake · 29/10/2024 13:42

I used to do Nanowrimo every year but eventually fell out of love with the official site and gave up. I would be interested in restarting with support elsewhere but with no expectation of getting to 50k because I’m out of practice!

MargaretThursday · 29/10/2024 14:12

My rough understanding of what happened was there was something inappropriate between a mod and a/some under 18s.
This was reported but ignored until it couldn't be ignored.

In response to this they've told the group leaders to do lots of ott things, including full monitoring of any chats and reporting back regularly. Which other than making it a far bigger job, also feels big brother.

I don't really know all the ins and outs. I'm on a Discord server with the random areas that don't have an official place, but never did much there.
A group on Scribe are doing something similar, so I may join them

TopBunk · 29/10/2024 15:44

Ahhh. What a pity.

I did nano about ten years ago but fell out of love with it because I felt they were pushy for donations. I had thought to give it another go but perhaps not, reading this.

HundredAcreOwl · 30/10/2024 17:48

I'm aware of (and in) several groups, mostly regional, which started on the main NaNo site but used Discord because communication was easier, and are now explicitly not associated with nanowrimo.org but still running November Writing Challenges of various sorts.

The ones I know are all still led by experienced ex-MLs, who seem to be running with what was good about NaNo, still voluntary work. I am therefore fairly sure there must be other platforms running similar? Not sure if a google would help find them?

I'm in 3 UK, 1 USA, 1 Elsewhere 'regional' groups, also GWIC. I'm happy to try to answer questions - emphasis on try! I'm still newish to Discord and the communities I am in (a couple of Novembers!)😊

Happy writing 📝

HundredAcreOwl · 30/10/2024 18:11

I'd be OK to start a November Writing thread if anyone would like?

It could be goals, words written, time spent on writing, daily writing (my goal), time taken up by research, whatever anyone finds helpful, especially if wanting accountability. I could do with being accountable 😀

WhisperTree · 01/11/2024 11:30

I've done Nanowrimo the past couple of years without signing up to their website (typical me, I wasn't even aware it was a website - thought it was just a hashtag).

It was at the back of my mind to do it this year, but the website itself seems dead - no messages on the forum since the end of last year.

Happy to check in here instead, if a few of you also seek 'accountability biddies'

lol 'buddies'

HundredAcreOwl · 01/11/2024 16:15

@WhisperTree I think they completely did not, possibly did not want to, understand the problems. The lack of safeguarding for under 18s and ignoring the reports, together with info from an ML I 'know', and that all my regional groups have left but are still going, mean I won't be updating my projects or word count on the site. I've not seen an apology for the lack of safeguarding yet, I'm reading excuses, and 'we are now doing this'.

It is a shame, but the communities that grew out of the original idea are still going strongly!

I've started a November Writing thread. I hope to post daily...
