Help me with this idea...

...when the opening few scenes shows something similar happening in different places / towns / countries / settings around the world.
So, for example, before a disaster, the viewer gets to see 'normal families eating a normal breakfast' in different cities across the world, from all corners.
Any ideas for this? It's driving me mad trying to think of some!
Even houses in the same street, or flats in the same apartment, to show how different people act / react to the same TV news for example, or to a forthcoming weather disaster like a hurricane or earthquake or asteroid...
Film preferably so I can watch it quicker than reading it 😉🙄

What about babies being born. They will only ever know the dystopia they grow up in.

Hi - sorry!
I'm looking for films where the opening 10 minutes or so is a series of places around the world, with, say, a family from each place beginning their day.
Often these are used in the beginning of sci fi or cli fi films.

But who is your main character? Surely you need to focus on your characters and their responses, otherwise your reader will get invested in someone who isn't going to appear in the book again?

MounjaroUser · 10/10/2024 16:49

Are you writing a script or a novel?

It's not similar but in Harry Met Sally you see a number of couples talking about how they met. It's a bit like the end of First Dates where the couples decide whether to go on another date or not - same format, I mean.

If it was all around the world, they wouldn't all be starting their day...

Good point, @LightSpeeds!

So there was a crowd-produced film a few years ago about this very thing called The Impact 50 - literally 50 examples of what you’re talking about so might be with looking up if you can

Peasnbeans · 10/10/2024 23:42

OBVIOUSLY people do different things at different times - but the point is to look for similar things. Everyone eats and sleeps - some will be rising, some will be sleeping. Everyone has a sun and a moon. Some will be alone, some will be in a crowd.
It's about imagination! And I have the protagonist nailed, I just asked for some ideas how to show others.
Thanks anyway - if you're not into cli-fi or indy presses / films, I get your confusion. It's not a linear narrative.

@SmugglersHaunt thanks this is just the kind of thing I mean.

isn't that the beginning of every episode of Casualty?

Yes, it's a sort of "Guess the stiff" game, isn't it?!😂

You want examples of different things to help with your book? Or examples of films you can review to see how they worked it?

I'm not clear what you are asking.

Yes, it’s not clear.

If you’re looking for fictional examples, OP, Emily St John Mandel’ s Station Eleven, set after a global pandemic has decimated the world’s population, has a brilliant passage about the last time anyone did something, like turn on an electric light, or load a web page.

LeafyGreenSalad · 19/10/2024 10:50

Independence Day?

Verbena17 · 04/11/2024 20:32

Do you mean like where lots of different people are all meeting their friends/family/colleagues at the airport in Love Actually? Same place, different people, different relationships?
