How important is the title?

Hi,

I've nearly finished my first novel but I'm so conflicted about what the title should be. Is a weak title something that would put off agents? I have three possible titles and all would emphasis a slightly different aspect, but all seem limiting in a way. I wish i could come up with something amazing. I feel it's my achilles heel...

I don't think it's super-important. Apparently a huge proportion of books are given different titles during the publishing process.

I think it depends, there is some 'don't judge a book by it's cover' to titles. But also I am drawn in by titles that sound interesting and put off by rubbishy ones or ones that don't really fit the genre

I think a good title is important at the time of the book being published.

I read a lot. As in I go through 2-3 books per week (more on holiday). I can only remember a handful of book titles. As long as it has a good synopsis or comes from a writer I like, I'll read it.

So I'd say it's important for it to be relevant, but the title doesn't get my attention anymore.

Thanks so much for the reassurances, I'll just give it my best attempt.

The title, cover and blurb are the most important parts. You don’t need to worry about that until you publish.

I went to a talk by a famous, bestselling author. She said the publisher decided on her titles, but occasionally she’d ‘win’ and they’d agree to go with her suggestion. Mainly not though!

mariiiajane · 28/07/2023 02:50

I find the blurb the most important part.

The title and the cover do draw interest, but deciding where or not to read it comes solely from what is written on the back for me.

My friend is a novelist. She usually has a working title for her books as she is writing them but her publishers are the ones who come up with the title before publication.
