POV Strange the Dreamer

I'm struggling with POV. Mainly omniscient and 3rd person limited /deep and like the POV of Strange the Dreamer.

If you are using limited or deep, does that mean you can't give description of location, people, history etc? If you want two POV characters but also be able to narrate, does that cause issues?

I've written my first 10,000 words and want to spend some time using them to learn how to write properly. It's fantasy.

Google says omniscient on one forum and also multiple limited POV on another. When I look at it I think it's both. Can you have both? I can also see a bit of head hopping but it doesn't seem to jar.

If you feel it works then go with it for now and see what your beta readers think.

Rules like ‘no head hopping!’ are handy rules of thumb to make life simpler when you are learning but skilled writers can and do do otherwise.

Reading more on POVs is seems people differ in their answers. For Strange the Dreamer, Harry Potter and GoT people will say omniscient, limited omnisceint or limited third person. Am I over thinking and should I just try to stick to the same style throughout?

I think you are overthinking. Write by instinct and only worry about the different nuances of limited, deep etc if it doesn’t work and you need to figure out why.

That’s my opinion anyway, other writers may say different!

I have never read Strange The Dreamer I am afraid so don’t know about that.

The HP is largely written in limited 3rd person (eg.the reader only knows what Harry knows at any one point) but with occasional dips into omniscience, in scenes which were clearly necessary to the story but which Harry was not present at, like the Death Eater meeting at Malloy Manor, Bellatrix and Narcissa at Snape’s house, the scene from the POV of the Muggle PM. And obviously we are sometimes getting someone else’s POV filtered through Harry’s, as when Harry uses the Pensieve to access Dumbledore, Slughorn or Snape’s memories.
